Publisher's Summary

Featuring the gripping plot, dramatic settings and believable characters that listeners have come to expect from Dick Francis, To the Hilt displays the master at the top of his form.

Alexander Kinloch is definitely the black sheep of his noble family, choosing the precarious life of a painter over a lucrative job in his stepfather’s brewery. But when a trusted assistant disappears with millions of pounds, Alexander is reluctantly thrust into a foreign world of bankers and auditors. Brutal thugs and jealous relatives stand in his way as he labors to save the business and protect the family treasures. In the face of adversity, Alexander must defend himself and his family’s honor to the hilt.

After three dozen novels, Dick Francis maintains his reputation as one of the most popular mystery writers of our time. Both suspenseful and poignant, To the Hilt is a wild ride through a perilous adventure.

    "Excellent as usual"
What made the experience of listening to To the Hilt the most enjoyable?

The James Bond of the equine world rides again! Great storytelling by the narrator and a great story by Francis. The other great thing about Francis is you get to learn a little about another subject. In this case, painting with acrylics.

What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Further character development. The thing with excellent narrators , like Prebble, is you feel you are a part of the story as a opposed to being read a story, usually by an American who sounds angry and abrasive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

    No.

"One of the top Must Read by Dick Francis"
If you could sum up To the Hilt in three words, what would they be?

    Intense, Endurance and Rich

What did you like best about this story?

The enduring loyalty, kindness, and dark humor of main character.

Which character – as performed by Simon Prebble – was your favorite?

He is never disappointing and brings to life everything he reads.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I gasped out loud and was not able to guess the true nature of a few of the characters with a few laughs too!

    Any additional comments?

This is a must read/listen for a Francis follower and a must read for any mystery lover

    "Compelling Intrigue"

This book sat on my shelf for quite a while before I finally decided to listen to it. What took me so long?! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The characters were wonderfully believable. The narrator's voices and interpretations were fantastic. The mystery was intriguing, and all the loose ends were accounted for. I can sincerely praise this book TO THE HILT!

    "Not so horsey Dick Francis"

I was not familiar with Dick Francis' work prior to listening to this story. It's told in the first person by a character we come to like and admire. Francis is in high form, using humor and his inside knowledge of art and horses to make the story come alive and for the reader to feel "present" in the moments being told. The narrator is wonderful and conveys the humor and dry observations of the main character very well. Francis was clearly at his best, masterfully handling the many characters and subplots with ease. A real joy.

"I am bored to the hilt!"

If you like a book that opens with drama and violence and then backpedals to nothing but conversation between two-dimensional characters, and to tons of narration and other forms of exposition, this is the book for you. I’m not quite halfway through, but I’m done. Audible gets this one back.

"A Great Read and Great Listen"

I'm a big Dick Francis fan, and this novel in print has always been a favorite read. The plot is gripping, the characters are well-developed, and Mr. Francis displays an understanding of his protagonist's mind as though he himself were born a reclusive, light-obsessed painter. Simon Prebble's narration of Alexander (from whose viewpoint the entire tale is presented) is flawless, and adds a depth to the story that was unexpected. I might have to add more Francis to my audible library!
