Publisher's Summary

The inspiration for the major motion picture Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth.

The first novel in John le Carré's celebrated Karla trilogy, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a heart-stopping tale of international intrigue.

The man he knew as "Control" is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isn't quite ready for retirement - especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley recognizes the hand of Karla - his Moscow Centre nemesis - and sets a trap to catch the traitor.

The feature film adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) and features a cast that includes Gary Oldman as Smiley, Academy Award-winner Colin Firth (The King's Speech), and Tom Hardy (Inception).

    "5 Smileys"
What made the experience of listening to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy the most enjoyable?

I am giving this book 5 Smileys because it was a book I couldn't put down. I listen
on a Sansa Clip and our golden retriever got many more minutes walking the winter
winds along Chicago's lakefront, only because of the magic of this performance and
the writing. A walking chess game, it perhaps isn't the book for everyone. I had read
years ago on cassettes! an audible version of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and although I didn't really until this book realize that Smiley had a

What other book might you compare Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy to and why?

Spy Who Came In From The Cold

Have you listened to any of Michael Jayston’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I'm going to look him up.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely not.

    Any additional comments?

"Good performance of an ok story"

had a hard time following the story. characters were interesting but hard for me to keep straight. I like realistic or hostorical fiction about spies and espionage but this one seemed dated and muddled. never really get to know the love interest. the love triangle seemed superfluous to the story.

"Classic Spy Story-- Great Literary Voice"

Super character development, including use of place and description of minor gestures to convey moods. One can imagine that this may have been the reality of an unglamorous career in intelligence during the cold war.

    "Finally get the entire story."

I have read many of La Carrie's books and enjoyed them but had a difficult time keeping the whole story together. With Audible and Michael Jayston's narration I really enjoyed the entire story. I'm a new fan of Audible books.

    "Not an assassin book"

Was looking for an assassin book like victor the assassin by Tom wood or the grey man or John rain. This novel is not even close. There's slot of talk. Nothing happens. The characters are a bunch of old losers. After two hours, I deleted

    "Great Story, Great Narration "

Listened to it twice, and it was just as good the second time around. Have two more books by le Carre on my wishlist. Having read about Kim Philby, I think the author did a great job of telling the near truth about that failure of the circus. Great narration.

    "Classic spy novel still enthralls"

Complex story interweaving human relationships and fallout from love, friendship and betrayal from the national and intensely personal levels. Michael Jayston manages the various characters' weariness, worldliness, confusion, closeness, pain and hope deftly.

    "Intellectual greatness"

JlC is a master when it comes to creating the lives and intricate plots of spies. Without him, the genre would be at a huge loss. This book is one of the prime examples of gripping your brain without needing much action.
