Publisher's summary

Patrick Davis is a man with troubles. First his Hollywood dreams crumble, then his storybook marriage hits a snag. Finally, DVDs start being delivered to his house – DVDs which show that someone is watching him and his wife, that the two of them are being stalked and recorded by cameras hidden around and within their house. Then the e-mails start, and someone offers to fix everything, to take the mess his life has become and make it all right. Patrick figures it's the offer of a lifetime.

But Patrick couldn’t be more wrong. With every step he is deeper and deeper into the a web of intrigue that threatens everything he still has and values in this world. Before he knows it, he's in and in deep - and the only way out is to outwit and outplay his unseen opponents at their own game.

Critic reviews

"This is one of those 'can't put it down' novels: a thriller that moves so fast that it leaves you gasping for breath..." ( Daily Mail (UK) on They're Watching)
"Hurwitz frequently sets us up to expect one thing but delivers something entirely different. He keeps us constantly on our toes, and—this is especially good—he keeps us guessing right until the very last pages about exactly who has targeted Patrick and why. Highly recommended, especially for fans of Dean Koontz, Linwood Barclay, and Harlan Coben." ( Booklist)

Wow!

The story, characters and narrator is a synergy that really works. This is one of my favorites.

Gregg Hurwitz "They're Watching"

If you could sum up They're Watching in three words, what would they be?

Pure adrenaline rush!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Patrick Davis, of course

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott Brick is my all time favorite narrator! With his voice he is able to put you in the story . To feel what the characters feel.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but my heart wouldn't take it!!

Any additional comments?

This was the 3rd book I have read by Gregg Hurwitz and I always have to read something lighter in between because his books are so intense! I love reading them, just can't handle all of the adrenaline without a break!

Not my favorite Gregg Hurwitz

You don't read a Gregg Hurwitz book for realism- the plots and way things fall in line to play out are more like an 80s action movie. But he is masterful at creating tension and keeping you gripped to the main character. And he is quite inventive with unique storylines. That said I am starting to see a lot of patterns between his books and this makes the outcomes predictable and this diminishes my enjoyment of them. I am going to have to take a long break before reading another just so I can't predict the way it will play out

I've All But Stopped Writing Reviews But.....

This was an amazing book. I've read more books in this genre than I can count but They're Watching stands out as one of the best. So full of interesting gadgets for spying on people you'll actually begin to feel a bit paranoid. The protagonist and his wife face off against insurmountable troubles from bad guys and don't know why they are the targets of an assault. Gregg Hurwitz unfolds the story at a measured pace giving you plenty of characters to draw suspicion. I've read quite a few of his books and have yet to be disappointed. About to dive into another. If it's half as good as They're Watching I'm in for some great entertainment.

keep working it

The capsule summaries of this and the other Hurwitz book I read recently are so similar I can't really tell them apart. Hurwitz has mastered the genre and has enough interesting variations (so far) to keep telling similar stories again and again, and I'll keep reading them for a while to see if he can keep it up. They're topical and fast-paced and engaging.

One twist after another

Just when you think Patrick cannot possibly have one more terrible thing happen to him, of course he does. Hurwitz leads you down a road just so far and then jerks you to attention with a directional whiplash. Some of these are a bit more believeable than others, but they all keep your attention riveted on the story.
I have to agree with those who think Scott Brick's narration is a little over the top, creating suspense where none exists. It's like I TURNED THE CORNER!!! when a conversational tone would do. When the really tight suspense occurs in the novel, the narrative doesn't change in any measurable way. Brick's voice, and his ability to change intonation with the characters, however, is superb.
I thought I had figured out the answer to this mystery about halfway through, and I'm pleased that I was wrong and fooled by some clever red herrings. All in all, this is a pretty well-written and tense thriller. I'll listen to his latest one, expecting more of the same.

Great listen

Any additional comments?

This was a great story! I couldn't wait to get into my car and listen. It is the story of a regular couple that gets caught up in an extraordinary situation. Twists and turns abound.

King of the twists

Constant twists and turns but just a little too long. Scott Brick does his usual excellent job.
