Publisher's summary

One cop's lie has set a killer free.

Four years after serial killer Rudy Cutter was sent away for life, San Francisco homicide inspector Frost Easton uncovers a terrible lie: his closest friend planted false evidence to put Cutter behind bars. When he's forced to reveal the truth, his sister's killer is back on the streets.

Desperate to take Cutter down again, the detective finds a new ally in Eden Shay. She wrote a book about Cutter and knows more about him than anyone. And she's terrified. Because for four years, Cutter has been nursing revenge day after stolen day.

Staying ahead of the game of a killer who's determined to strike again is not going to be easy. Not when Frost is battling his own demons. Not when the game is becoming so personal. And not when the killer's next move is unlike anything Frost expected.

EXCELLENT ! Leaves you wanting more!!!!!

This is another author who consistently writes good books. I don't think I have ever read anything written by him that I didn't like. Fortunately this book follows suit and is an excellent read.
Combine this with the Excellent narration by Joe Barrett and you can't go wrong! I really enjoy Barrett's style. He gets sarcasm and delivers flawlessly.
This book has a serial killer getting released from prison due to a police officer planting the evidence that got him convicted. Frost Easton was that cops partner. Although he can't officially work on the case because his sister was also a victim, he tries to get enough evidence on the man to send him back. There's no who done it in this book. It a great cat and mouse chase and because the killer begins killing again as soon as he's released. It's a race figure out who future victims might be and get to them before he does.
The last 1/2 hour gives one final jaw dropping twist.
If you have kindle unlimited the ebook is free and this audio book will cost you $1.99.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.

Book 2 in the Frost Easton series

The combination of author Brian Freeman and narrator Joe Barrett is difficult to beat! The Voice Inside is very different from The Night Bird which is Book 1 in the Frost Easton series. This is an outstanding police procedural set in San Francisco. When I thought the novel was ending the story continued with a plot twist that identifies a second antagonist.

WELL DONE, MR. FREEMAN. WELL DONE.

One of the most creative mysteries I've read or listened to in a long time. While the narrator's unique voice is better suited to humor, he didn't take anything away from Mr. Freeman's great story. Buy it if you don't have an audiobook credit!

I had so many conflicting emotions about this book

The narrator grew on me in the first book. Initially I thought I would not listen because I didn't like his voice but I actually feel he was the perfect narrator for this type of book. In this book, I felt so conflicted about what Frost did. While it was indeed the right thing I didn't know if it was the best thing. But I know that if things like what Jess did is allowed it could easily be a slippery slope. Then I was mad at Maria Lopez because surely you could have waited until conditions were better to take a run. This was an excellent book. Kept you guessing and feeling so many emotions as you listened.

No accents please

I enjoyed the book and the narrator is good except he can not do accents. I could not tell if she was southern or British or what.

OMG!!! Amazing!

I loved every minute of this book. The depth, the intrigue, the twists, the turns. It all comes together as one awesome book. To quote a YouTuber that my son watch's, "Holy Hell!, this book, ya know!"

Not quite as good as The Night Bird but still good

What made the experience of listening to The Voice Inside the most enjoyable?

Familiar character Frost Easton & story line about his sister's death

What did you like best about this story?

It's as well written as the previous!

Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have! It was about the same as in The Night Bird!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Always listen to...
(The Voice Inside)

Any additional comments?

For some reason I didn't enjoy this as much as The Night Bird. Maybe because this time I was expecting a "twist" at the end that I didn't see coming. Regarding that twist, *spoiler alert* personally I felt it inauthentic that his sister's killer was who it turned out to be.

Summary

This story was just okay for me. Not really my book of choice. I was able to figure out a few details.

Falls flat compared to The Night Bird.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Don't get me wrong, the serial killer plot was halfway decent - but there was too much emphasis on sex/romance compared to the first book, during which listeners must endure very cheesy dialogue that felt impossibly awkward and forced.

Would you be willing to try another one of Joe Barrett’s performances?

No, I disliked the extreme breathiness of his voice. He also portrays the character of Frost Easton as much older than he is supposed to be or as readers may imagine. I couldn't stand his Australian accent, either.

Excellent Twists!

Book 2 of the Frost Easton series definitely did not disappoint. Excellent character development enhances an exciting and mysterious plot to keep you entertained! The story is plotted with intriguing twists that have you flipping pages, or in my case driving around the block again to hear more!
