Publisher's summary

A thrilling novel from number one international best-selling author Sara Blaedel, author of The Forgotten Girls.

"One of the best I've come across." (Michael Connelly)

"Sara Blaedel is a force to be reckoned with. She's a remarkable crime writer who time and again delivers a solid, engaging story that any reader in the world can enjoy." (Karin Slaughter)

"One can count on emotional engagement, spine-tingling suspense, and taut storytelling from Sara Blaedel." (Sandra Brown)

Already widowed by the age of 40, Ilka Nichols Jensen, a school portrait photographer, leads a modest, regimented, and uneventful life in Copenhagen. Until unexpected news rocks her quiet existence: Her father - who walked out suddenly and inexplicably on the family more than three decades ago - has died. And he's left her something in his will: his funeral home. In Racine, Wisconsin.

Clinging to this last shred of communication from the father she hasn't heard from since childhood, Ilka makes an uncharacteristically rash decision and jumps on a plane to Wisconsin. Desperate for a connection to the parent she never really knew, she plans to visit the funeral home and go through her father's things - hoping for some insight into his new life in America - before preparing the business for a quick sale. But when she stumbles on an unsolved murder and a killer who seems to still be very much alive, the undertaker's daughter realizes she might be in over her head....

Interesting characters

The characters were interesting and the story was compelling. There were some scenes that seemed forced. Overall book was a hit and I would read the next book in the series.

Too many bodies

Well, I now know much more about funerals than I wanted to know. This suspense story is set in a Racine funeral home. There is a "who done it" to be discovered as well as many other things. Who do we owe money to, why does everyone want the business, are my employees loyal? Not all these are answered, leading to the subsequent books.

Awful narrator

I’m sure the storyline is great, but I could not listen to the robotic, terrible narrator. I tried to get into the book, but the narrator was just not for me.

Wouldn’t recommend

Never have I given a novel anything under 3 stars...until this one. The narration was the worst I’ve heard here on Audible. And the end of this was abrupt and flat.

Very unsatisfying

This book leaves the reader with too many questions. If you want resolution you need to buy the next book and I am guessing the next and the next. Not a very interesting plot. I am returning it and would not read another by this author.

This book made me angry!

Let’s forget about a slow moving story or characters that you don’t care about, but to pull a cheap trick to get us to buy the next book? NO WAY! I don’t care about these people or how the story ends, and if that is the only way this author can sell books, I don’t care for her either. Save your time and your money.
