Publisher's Summary

Sally is 25, and somebody wants to destroy her. She receives divorce papers from a man she has never met, let alone married - yet this trap is so well laid that she is powerless to prove otherwise.

When custody of her precious daughter is awarded to this evil stranger, it is the beginning of a terrifying struggle in which Sally will have to fight, with a gun if necessary, for the freedom of her family.

The third instalment of the quartet. Sally is a surprising and modern heroine, and her fight against unknown and relentless evil in Victorian London makes an exhilarating and unforgettable novel.

An unabridged reading of Philip Pullman's nerve-shattering thriller.

Wonderful book, great narrator

Philip Pullman writes beautifully! A well researched period mystery, full of suspense and drama. Anton Lesser narrates magnificently.

Thrills and suspense, Victorian style.

Sally Lockhart is no ordinary Victorian heroine and Philip Pullman's series of four books will keep you enthralled as you follow her adventures in Victorian London and beyond. This is the third book in the series but I strongly recommend that you read the books in order (Ruby in the Smoke, Shadow in the North, Tiger in the Well and the Tin Princess) to keep the characters and plot developments in order. Each book moves at a cracking pace with the action hurrying you along yet never losing the chance to paint a convincing picture of Victorian life and the restrictions on women. Highly recommended.

Outstanding narration

Anton Lesser brings this book to life. I'll be looking out for more with him. Pullman's writing wonderful as always, lots of twists and turns.

Disappointing

What would have made The Tiger in the Well better?

Lesser's performance was good, but the book itself compared to first two in the series is just plain boring. I regret buying it and would not recommend to anyone. Enjoy Sally's previous adventures and leave it at Shadow in the North.

Darker than the previous books

The story was still gripping though this one had darker undertones. The author also used the opportunity to explore social and political issues of the day. Well narrated. Overall, this was a good listen though some bits were slow and I missed the lighthearted interludes in the previous books.

Superb end to the trilogy

I have really enjoyed the Sally Lockhart mysteries. I love the way Phillip Pullman writes strong female leads, and I love the setting and the vivid characters he depicts. This novel is less of a Victorian adventure than the first two novels and deals with darker and deeper issues that cause Sally to question everything she believes about herself and the society she lives in.
Anton Lesser is one of the best narrators I have ever heard, with an amazing range of voices and accents. He pulls you into the story and the pace never lets up.
The perfect combination of story and narrator - I can't recommend these highly enough.

Another exciting tale.

The third in the Sally Lockhart series and every bit as good as the others. The sequence of events may be a bit improbable at times but this is a fast moving story excellently read.

A hard read but engrossing

What did you like most about The Tiger in the Well?

Philip Pullman ‘s heroine Sally Lockheart has immense strength of character and we know she will win out in the end..but my what a journey we’re taken on in this book. So uncomfortable to hear, a woman’s worst nightmare, having her identity challenged so completely and the strong possibility she may lose custody of her child. So we read on ..

What did you like best about this story?

Interesting historical background, albeit disturbing to hear. The parallels with today’s social situation are unmistakable.

What does Anton Lesser bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Brilliant acting and characterisation.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book unnerved me, especially at the beginning, when I almost wanted to stop reading it, as it was so painful!

Any additional comments?

A very hard read, full of emotional turmoil only alleviated in the conclusion of the book. The disturbing concepts raised about our own society continue to resonate long after the book is finished.

Anton does a stellar job at telling a brilliant story!

Anton Lessor reads the Sally Lockhart series in a way that I couldn’t even read it in my head. He brings the characters to life, giving each their own precise way of talking. It really is perfection. Another fantastic novel by Philip Pullman, full of mystery and suspense.

Outstanding narrator

Anton Lesser's skill in narrating this third book in the Sally Lockhart series are as phenomenal as in the first two and I am only sorry to reach the end.
