Publisher's summary

From the 11th storey of a Los Angeles high-rise, Nate looks out on the city - the traffic, the trees and the beach beyond. He breathes deeply. And then he moves one foot off the ledge and into thin air. But before he can jump, gunshots ring out from within the building. A robbery is in progress. And Nate, with nothing to lose but the life he was about to give up, decides to intervene. What happens next plunges Nate into mortal danger...and reunites him with the family he hasn't known for years - a family he will do anything to protect.

Packed with twists and suspense, hurtling forward at relentless speed, The Survivor is a gripping, unforgettable story of sacrifice, redemption and heroism.

Not what I expected

Warning: this book begins with a suicide attempt that is dramatized, discussed and supported by coherent logic.

Once you get past that... it’s a fair amount of action, a solid thriller style plot snd some interesting twists. Like many thrillers there are some overdone dramas, but overall it’s pretty good.

I would recommend to anyone not sensitive to the suicide issues.

Dark Story

I usually fly through Greg Hurwitz's novels. But this one - just really really dark and I'd have to say way too dark for me.... The lead character is a vet with a terminal diagnosis of ALS, and he sees his dead best friend/fellow soldier in disturbing visions. While the story was interesting and the lead character sympathetic, I found the story mentally difficult to read ... As is the author's way, the story is filled with thrills and chills and horrific bad guys, but I found myself picking up and putting down the story several times before finally finishing it. I guess I wasn't in the mood for a dark and depressing storyline - so I had to give it 3 stars because I literally forced myself to finish the book... That said, I will still wait feverishly for all new books by this author - I'm a huge fan, but this one just didn't work for me.

Jeff Harding was good with the delivery of the story

I listened to it twice in two weeks

Where does The Survivor rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I enjoyed it as much as the far fetched but action packed Matthew Reilly books most of which I own.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot was complicated and the characters believable.

Which scene was your favorite?

The beginning in the bank

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nope

Any additional comments?

The narrator did a great job of differenciating between the characters. I was never at a loss as to who was who.
