Publisher's summary

Detective Isaac Bell, hero of The Chase and The Wrecker, returns in the remarkable new adventure from the number-one New York Times best-selling author.

It is 1908, and international tensions are mounting as the world plunges toward war. When a brilliant American battleship-gun designer dies in a sensational apparent suicide, the man's grief-stricken daughter turns to the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency to clear her father's name.

Van Dorn puts his chief investigator on the case, and Isaac Bell soon realizes that the clues point not to suicide but to murder. And when more suspicious deaths follow, it becomes clear that someone - an elusive spy - is orchestrating the destruction of America's brightest technological minds....and the murders all connect to a top-secret project called Hull 44.

But that is just the beginning. As the intrigue deepens, Bell will find himself pitted against German, Japanese, and British spies, in a mission that encompasses dreadnought battleships, Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Isaac Bell has certainly faced perilous situations before, but this time it is more than the future of his country that's at stake - it's the fate of the world.

Turn of the century thuggary brought to life!

This was an excellent audio book. The words brought wonderful images to your mind and kept you wanting more. The characters were magnificently to life with amazing background that made you like and hate them. I recommend this book and the narrator was great with his accents, inflections and pauses for effect and drama.

1908 espionage case for Isaac Bell!

One does not associate a private detective with an espionage case, but in this great case set in 1908 Isaac Bell does have an espionage case. Clive Cussler writing with Justin Scott may be better than writing alone.

I loved the 10 year flash ahead at the end.

Great book narrated by the best narrator in the business!

Another Cussler solid story

I am enjoying the Issac Bell series. A wonderfully written storyline. So far it is giving the Oregon Files a run for the money!!

Wonderful but how does he do it?

Slightly cartoonish characters, improbable (to say the least) plots but great fun. His love of the period and the excitement of the explosion of new technology at the beginning of the last century is part of the reason it's so much fun but the rest is just that great cartoons -and movie serials - and radio shows - were fun when the person writing them had the talent to make them so.

Another excellent ride!

This one is slightly slower through the first half but really pours on the steam (ha! pun intended - you will get that later). Isaac Bell is my favorite character driven series.

I always enjoy a good action audiobook

Scott Brick is my favorite narrator for action books, especially Clive Cusslers.
I look forward to the next one, which I have already downloaded.
