Publisher's summary

London's East End, 1888. When darkness falls, terror begins.

The foggy streets of London's Whitechapel district have become a nocturnal hunting ground for Jack the Ripper, and no woman is safe. Flower girl Constance Piper is not immune to dread, but she is more preoccupied with her own strange experiences of late.

Clairvoyants seem to be everywhere these days. In desperation, even Scotland Yard has turned to them to help apprehend the Ripper. Her mother has found comfort in contacting her late father in a séance. But are such powers real? And could Constance really be possessed of second sight? She longs for the wise counsel of her mentor and champion of the poor, Emily Tindall, but the kind missionary has gone missing.

Following the latest grisly discovery, Constance is contacted by a high-born lady of means who fears the victim may be her missing sister. She implores Constance to use her clairvoyance to help solve the crime, which the press is calling "the Whitechapel Mystery", attributing the murder to the Ripper.

As Constance becomes embroiled in intrigue far more sinister than she could have imagined, assistance comes in a startling manner that profoundly challenges her assumptions about the nature of reality. She'll need all the help she can get - because there may be more than one depraved killer out there.

who let this slip by?

To put it plainly - this is awful. I could not get past the start of the 2nd chapter. the narration is awful- the worst accents -and the second voice is ridiculous. The accent changes as she reads! The story has historical flaws that make it so hard to read - not referring to the ripper- we GET she is not an expert - but what the characters say is all wrong. the culture is wrong. it may get better - but it almost burned my ears - i could not get past the beginning this is just sad, production where are you?

How can a great idea turn into a tedious book

It's a good book; until it isn't. At first, switching between the two characters is confusing because, although voiced by two different artists, they sounded too similar to each other to recognize that someone else was now speaking. One narrator would have been fine.

It's told from two different points of view going through different times in their lives. Unfortunately, the times vary wildly between the two until you just wish there was one timeline rather then one person telling you what's going to happen while waiting several back and forth perspective switches to actually happen.

I really liked the book at first, then I thought "Ok. I'll give it a little more time." THEN I thought "When will it end?! Haven't the characters and listeners suffered enough?"

It might not sound like it, but I do enjoy Tessa Harris' other work and the description on this new series sounded fantastic so I bought it. I rarely return a book in audible this will be the third book I've sent back in literally years. I feel like I wasted my money and my time.

I wholeheartedly suggest that you skip this one. It's one of the most aggravating stories I've ever heard. Too many plot lines. Too many characters. HUGE plot points left unresolved and not in a cliffhanger way, which I hate. No. It was just over.

My review is all over the place, just like this book.

a girl and a ghost do detection

I'm at chapter 30 of over 100 chapters. it goes back and forth between 2 characters, one of whom seems to be invisible and spends her time watching and describing gruesome murders. The constant switching and the fact that one is slowly revealed to be a ghost have ruined it for me. I don’t care any more what happened to Geraldine. I'm giving up, glad I didn't waste a credit. the historical stuff is interesting and Harris is great with language but the constant switching and having to figure out why Emily keeps watching murders and doing nothing about them makes the book a waste of time.

Unsatisfying Conclusion

That was a long way to go for a negligible payoff. Good narration, but not a great story.

Historically accurate Fiction

highly recommend
a mystery set around Jack the Ripper, fictional not a new take on facts. Well researched Historical view of the everyday lives at the time with just a pinch of the paranormal. The history of other events and crimes at this time was fresh knowledge.

An interesting twist on the Ripper

The first person reading/narration takes a bit of getting used to but it comes together nicely in the end!
Tess Harris is a strong enough writer to pull off that and twist a plot.

This is a very silly book.

Decent brain candy but really quite goofy, and the ending is clumsy and pretty disappointing.

Good and yet!

The story here is well done but the recording of it with characters having different voices and changing frequently, it takes quite a way into the listening to figure out who is talking. Cockney accents aren’t familiar to me and the main character having 2 voices is quite confusing. Reading it would have been so much better. I’m not really into “Jack the Ripper” and gory details either.

A (G)ripping Tale

I was into this from start to finish. A very imaginitive story set amidst actual events. Some pretty good "what if" theory is what you take away at the end of a story that satisfies.

Not good

I kept waiting for it to get better. The narrator is good but the story is ridiculous. I finished it but it was a waste of time. I guess if I was a teenager and just starting to read mysteries it would be okay.
