Publisher's Summary

One fine day, A.D. 70, Sosia Camillina quite literally runs into Marcus Didius Falco on the steps of the Forum. It seems Sosia is on the run from a couple of street toughs, and after a quick and dirty rescue, P.I. Falco wants to know why.

Falco finds out that Sosia, the niece of a highly placed senator, holds the secret to a stockpile of silver pigs, ingots intended for no good use. Hoping for future favors from Sosia's powerful uncle, Falco embarks on an intricate case of smuggling, murder, and treason that reaches into the palace itself. And if he does not tread lightly, the treacherous puzzle of the silver pigs could buy him a one-way ticket to his own funeral pyre.

Cod Latin

As usual the BBC have produced a very good production of The Silver Pigs. If you want a real insight into the Roman world, look elswhere; this is more like Inspector Morse in a toga. Anton Lesser does not strike me as the best person to portray Falco but, putting that aside, this is a gripping production which is a good introduction to the Falco series.

Silver pigs.

An excellent radio adaptation of the first Falco book. I first came across Anton Lesser in audio books and he's an excellent MDF. His asides and wit amused the whole family. It is very sad that Fritha Goodey's passing prevented her playing Helena Justina in the following dramatisations- she was excellent. The right degree of upper class. This is one that will keep coming out of the cupbord.

Excellent

Brilliant adaptation. Fantastic casting, only downside is that I wished it had been a little longer. Well worth a listen.

What a joy and delight!

What a superb dramatisation of the first book in this wonderful series. If you like whodunnits, with a bit of a historical twist, then Marcus Didius Falco is the man for you! The plot and characters are well conceived, and instantly draw the listener into AD70 Rome. Anton Lesser is perfectly cast as Falco, and makes him a likeable and believable character.

I discovered Lindsey Davis' series after listening to this drama on the radio. I can recommend the other three in the series - four full length dramas should satisfy you for a while. Any chance of the BBC getting around to making some more of these?

An excellent series staring the wonderful Anton Lesser.

I first heard this in BBC Radio 4extra and was immediately taken by it. From the first hearing I wanted to get the audio book. Now I have I can't recommend it highly enough.
Having listened to 'The Silver Pigs' I'm eager to download the other dramatisations of the Falcon series. Anton Lesser has to have one of the best voices for this work.

Did not work for me. Not one bit.

I selected this on the basis of good reviews and because I enjoy a full cast but it turned out to be a complete disappointment. Sounded like "Carry on Rome" to me, the historical setting didn't work and if it was meant to be funny I didn't get it, especially the old fashioned take on male - female relationships. Overall I thought it was lowest common denominator stuff. If you like detectives stories with a real plot and genuine insight into history and not just a gimmick best avoid this ...
