Publisher's summary

A canine Search and Rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness in this riveting #1 New York Times bestseller from Nora Roberts.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life - a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school and a challenging volunteer job performing Canine Search and Rescue. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare: an encounter with the Red Scarf Killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude necessary to rebuild her life with her three loyal Labs. But all that changes on the day intensely private wood artist Simon Doyle barrels up her drive with an out-of-control puppy, desperate for her help.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands...

Critic reviews

"[T]he romance is finely done, with Roberts's trademark banter lighting up the page. Fiona and Simon are the main attraction, but the setting and the supporting characters - with paws and without - provide a vivid backdrop." (Publishers Weekly)

“Search-and-rescue dogs are a focal point of this wonderful tale of love and adventure. Roberts has a marvelous ability to blend in the perfect amounts of character drama, realistic romance and chilling suspense. The result - an unputdownable read! Roberts again proves why her name is synonymous with excellence.” (RT Book Reviews)

“Strong romantic suspense.... The serial killer subplot is not new, as the copycat has been done before, but Nora Roberts makes it seem fresh with her incredible writing skill as she uses the Search and Rescue canines as key elements in the exciting story line. Readers will enjoy Ms. Roberts’ entertaining Puget Sound thriller.” (Midwest Book Review)

I liked the listen

I almost did not get this book due to another review that said you must like dogs to enjoy the book. Very untrue! As long as you like her other mysteries you will love this one. It helps to like animals but it isn't a deal breaker. Ms. Roberts hit the target again and has not disappointed her fans.

Fire Sale

I know why this book was on sale - it was a trick to get everyone to buy it. Like some of the others said, I love dogs, but this is over the top. Nora really took researching dog training and writing about it to far. If you need to train your dogs this is a great book, I learned a couple of tricks I'll use on my dog but if you want a good romance this isn't it.

The characters were not well written (probably because so much time was spent detailing every piece of fur on the dogs). Simon was somewhat of an unlikeable character and you never felt the connection between them. The serial killer was a 3rd or 4th thought that could have made the book suspenseful but didn't.

Top it off with some very bad narration and you have The Search. Tanya Eby sounds like an automated robot that speeds up and slows down in strange spirts making it uncomfortable to listen. Please, please get a new narrator!!

Great Story & Performance. Nora strikes again!!!

Wonderful story & plot. You can't beat Nora Roberts for romance with some suspense thrown in. I love the storyline with the dogs & their training. The narrator did an excellent job.

Great Story

I found the story to be delightful. Just enough of a thriller to keep the romance from being tedious. I loved the relationship between Fiona and Simon. They're non-sappy dialoge reminds me of my husband and me. I learned a few pointers for training my next puppy. (I was NOT the alpha dog.) Both serial killers were creepy and scary. I want more stories with dog training as a bonus.

narration is horrible

no one wants to listen to a whiny narrator. especially one that is periodically sing songy.

Outstanding!! Roberts at her very best!

I totally loved this book! Simon and Fiona are delightful and the dogs adorable. The plot was interesting and the Search and Rescue team adding a unique element. Roberts proves again that she is in a class all her own. I highly recommend this one folks.

Disappointing

I also bought this book on sale. I usually find Nora Roberts pretty easy reading but this book was/is (because I don't think I can even bother to finish it) pretty awful. The characters are dull; the narration is boring and even though I love dogs, I was bored to death.

Boring!!

I got this book on sale and it's no wonder it was.... because I could not even finish it! I have enjoyed other books by Roberts, but this one was just plain boring. The narration was irritating as well. I wonder if Audible will give me back a credit just for suffering as long as I did through the first half of this book and you'll probably bury this review on the last page but you would be doing your good customers (like me) a big favor if you didn't!

dissapointed

I have been a fan of Nora Roberts for several years and when I saw this newest book by her I was excited. However, I am definately dissapointed by this offering. The writing is terrible. The characters are shallowly developed and unrealistic and the story was boring unsubstantial . It is not even much of a mystery story. Instead, it was just stupid.

The F Word is EVERYWHERE

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No need for the F word CONSTANTLY. NONE!

Has The Search turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not from other books int he genre, but definitely from this author. This was my last time to purchase her books.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tanya Eby?

ANYONE WITHOUT A LISP! Who hires these PEOPLE who have lispssssss????? HOW STUPID. The woman has a LISP!

What would have made this romance irresistible?

I have no answer for this question.

Any additional comments?

There are times when the F word is appropriate, but 90% of this could have been left out or used another word. They even had the dogs thinking the F word. SERIOUSLY?! The male character used it constantly in just every day speak ... it had no place whatsoever. The sex scenes were just too harsh, unloving and disgusting. Many have complained about all the dog training info, but I found that interesting ... the rest of the book, not so much. This will be my last purchase from this author. I did just finish WITNESS from this author and it was very good, but I won't buy any more of hers due to the language. It's just not necessary to use that language CONSTANTLY.
