Publisher's summary

The thrilling sequel to The Killing Season, a new energetic crime saga featuring Carter Blake, a protagonist in the tradition of Jack Reacher, Alex Cross, and Jason Bourne.

When the mutilated body of a young woman is discovered in the Santa Monica Mountains, LAPD detective Jessica Allen knows she's seen this before - two and a half years ago on the other side of the country. A sadistic serial killer has been operating undetected for a decade, preying on lone female drivers whose cars have broken down. The press dub the killer "the Samaritan", but with no leads - and a killer who leaves no traces - the police investigation quickly grinds to a halt.

That's when Carter Blake shows up to volunteer his services. He's a skilled man hunter with an uncanny ability to predict the Samaritan's next moves. At first Allen and her colleagues are suspicious. After all, their new ally shares some uncomfortable similarities with the man they are tracking. But as the Samaritan takes his slaughter to the next level, Blake must find a way to stop him...even if it means bringing his own past crashing down on top of him.

from 5 tp a 3, but good

This writing started so oddly I thought I had purchasd the incorrect title. So stay with the introductory chapters until you knee deep in bodies. It holds together well until the closing. Next book neefs a tougher editor.

This series is great (and rivals Reacher for me)

I had been looking for another great character since finishing Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series; and this is the first one I think matches him.

Carter Blake is also a former elite Army “detective” living a nomad lifestyle. He also finds his way onto local teams (that usually include a strong female character). However, he has a lot more emotion than Reacher. His loneliness is driven by circumstance, not choice. He makes mistakes, and has the skills to work through them.

I found myself rooting for him similar to Reacher. I also enjoyed how I learned about Carter’s works through his high-knowledge thought process.

This is a really high level series, and I can’t wait to follow it further.

'These ones'?

I've lost count of how many times I've corrected my children , grandchildren, and their friends regarding 'these ines'. What's up with the author to say that and the editor for not correcting that. The character , Blake, is telling the story. I don't think he is poorly educated in the use of the English language.

Too much of the phraseology is awkward, maybe British? I don't understand why so many authors write stories that take place in the USA yet use Brit sayings. If the author writes a supposed American based story, then please don't use sayings that aren't used here. For me, it's annoying .

Great story, Characters need more depth

I really enjoyed the story and the ending took me by surprise; always a good thing in my opinion. Both the male and female protagonists had interesting backgrounds, but I never felt I really knew them and frankly didn't develop enough of a relationship with either to get invested in what happened to them. A pity, because with that element this could have been a terrific book along the lines of Lee Child. I believe given time and experience Mr. Cross will improve character development and I look forward to reading his next book to see the difference.

this series is exciting !

I started this series and have listened to the first three books and can't wait to start the next book! You can't guess what Carter will do when faced with seemingly impossible situations but he gets out of them! Peter Giles is one of the best narrators I have heard and now I'm looking for other books he has done because he makes the books come alive. You are kept guessing on what Carter will do to get out of impossible looking situations but he does! This is my favorite series (along with Orphan X)!
