Publisher's summary

Cooper Dixon should have it made, with a beautiful wife, Kelly, two great kids, and a thriving business, the Tower Agency. But for Cooper, things aren’t turning out how he expected. He and Kelly are caught in a never-ending cycle of arguments - Cooper can’t remember the last time they had sex. And Cooper’s troubled business partner, Gates Ballenger, is scheming to sell the Tower Agency out from under him.

When a gang of criminals is hired by a mysterious client to kidnap Kelly and set up Cooper to take the fall, Cooper’s life goes completely off the rails. The cops quickly zero in on Cooper as the prime suspect, and the combination of an attractive suburban mother, workaholic husband, and a million-dollar insurance policy makes the case primetime television fodder.

Soon, Cooper’s face is plastered on every TV screen in the country. Cooper races against time to find his wife before the gang turns her over to their client, whose plan to take down Cooper is far more sinister than anyone could imagine.

A nice surprise

I have read only one other Bobby Cole book and I liked it but this one was much better. I admit that I have never heard of the term 'rented mule', so I was confused. I was three quarters into the book before I learned what it meant. If you already know what the term means before going into the book, I assure you that you will still be surprised. There was one small problem had with the book. Two of the characters were a little over the top. It could have been played down a little and still the message would have gotten across to the reader. I recommend this book, I assure you that you will enjoy this book if you enjoy this genre.

Okay...

Just okay for me, kind of like a B movie but the characters were good and it did not drag.

Not his best!

I have enjoyed each of Bobby Cole’s other books but the final 20% of The Rented Mule was just plain silly and nonsensical even for a work of fiction.

It is a good story, well told.

This story was interesting, all the characters were well developed, and the ending was not obvious.

I have read all 3 of Bobby Coles books and this is by far my favorite.

The book grabs your full attention from the very start. All the characters were developed as the story moved on. At times you can make predictions as to who is doing what to who and never be totally correct until the very end. I would love to see this book "The rented
mule" made into a movie .

Plot Twists Galore!

If you could sum up The Rented Mule in three words, what would they be?

Quick, easy read.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I wouldn't say it kept me on the edge of my seat but it did keep me in my seat in order to find out what would happen next.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I think it did, though the main characters voice seemed to change midway through.

Interesting setup fizzles in the third act

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It depends on the friend - it plays out a little like a TV movie at times.

Would you be willing to try another book from Bobby Cole? Why or why not?

His characters are interesting, so I would probably try one more title to see how he handles other ideas.

Which character – as performed by David de Vries – was your favorite?

Don Daniels!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

No idea!

Any additional comments?

Great narration, great characters (though a few silly ones) and an over-the-top ending that spoils an interesting setup.
