Publisher's Summary

Cavanaugh, a former member of Delta Force who now works as a protector for those rich enough to afford him and his team, is hired by a brilliant scientist named Prescott who needs protection from a powerful drug lord seeking the highly addictive drug he has invented. At least that is what Cavanaugh is led to believe. After Cavanaugh trains the scientist in escape and evasion, the unthinkable occurs: Cavanaugh's team is viciously attacked and entirely wiped out - and Prescott seems to be in collusion with the attackers. Now Cavanaugh must fight against his own tactics and anticipate his enemy's every move while suffering the consequences of the real secret Prescott is hiding: a unique weapon that induces fear.

Couldn't continue with this book ...

Any additional comments?

I'm not continuing with this book after the first disk because the narrator was putting me to sleep ... I might go back to it later, but very doubtful.

exceedingly slow narration

The speaker was so slow that I could not listen to it at all after 10 minutes. I tried to increase the speed but it didn't help. I've listened to many audiobooks and this is the first I had to stop for slow narration. I very seldom give this low of a rating.

GOES ON AND ON AND ON

LET ME TELL YOU, I'M A FAN OF DAVID MORRELL. WHEN I'M LOOKING FOR STORIES WITH STRONG ACTION AND TOUGH MALE LEADS HE IS USUALLY A SOLID CONTENDER. AND THE PROTECTOR SEEMED LIKE A SOLID BUY. AND FOR THE MOST PART IT DOES DELIVER ON THE FRONTS OF ACTION AND A GREAT LEAD CHARACTER. BUT - MAN - CAN THIS STORY USE SOME EDITING. IT SEEMS TO GO ON AND ON AND ON. IF I WASN'T A DIE HARD FAN I PROBABLY COULD HAVE HIT THE FAST FORWARD BUTTON AND SKIPPED A FEW CHAPTERS AND NOT HAVE MISSED ANYTHING EXCEPT SOME VERY LONG - DRAWN OUT- SEQUENCES OF THE CHARACTER ESCAPING ONE PITFALL AFTER ANOTHER. AS FAR AS THE NARRATOR, STEFAN RUDNICKI, HE DID AN ADMIRABLE JOB WITH THE MATERIAL. HIS VOICES FOR THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS WORKED WELL; BUT THERE WERE SOME INSTANCES WHERE THE EMOTION OF THE READING SEEMED FLAT. AN OKAY EFFORT. I'VE READ AND HEARD BETTER BY MORRELL AND RUDNICKI.

Simply Could Not Listen

What didn’t you like about Stefan Rudnicki’s performance?

Frankly, I can't rate the quality of the story because I listened to the first hour in different environments where I normally listen and gave up. The audio quality is terrible and, no offense to Mr. Rudnicki, but his voice is so low that with the poor audio quality, I can't enjoy the reading of the book. Not only can I not enjoy it, I can barely make out the spoken words doing anything other than sitting perfectly still in a quiet environment.

Action for the sake of action

The plot design was primarily to allow a lot of action to fill the pages. Instead of character development or a story line with some depth, you get tons of action with twists but an overall predictable plot. Almost got three stars.

gas masks anyone?

great book. i love all the details and explanations. if you ever want to be a special agent, get this book. however, the story is not always believable. and finally, did it never occur to our smart main character to use some kind of gas mask for protection??

Plesantly surprised!

My first exposure to this author, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The book is very action packed, well written, and while at first I thought the reader was a tad monotone, it ended up suiting the book well, and he was not as monotone as I had thought.

The plot is exciting, the characters rich and it is simply an all around fun book to listen to. I would recommend this to anyone who likes action and spy novels. Exciting, fun and energetic book that I feel went by too quickly, I felt like the characters had become friends, and I am going to miss them when finished!

NOT like the other reviews

everyone said it was like one long car chase, i disagree because its NOT true, a fairly good book for Morrell, but somewhat reminiscent of the old Mack Bolan Executioner pulp novels from the 70s and 80s

Riveting, captivating, one of the best audio books I have ever listened to!

Didn't Really Like It

With all the other good reviews, I was disappointed. I thought it was overly dramatic and had a had time with my "willful suspension of disbelief".
