Publisher's summary

1666: The monastery at Andrechs has long been a pilgrimage destination, but when the hangman's daughter, Magdalena; her doctor husband, Simon; and their two small children arrive there, they learn that the monks have far larger concerns than saying Mass and receiving alms. It seems that once again the hangman's family has fallen into a mysterious and dangerous adventure.

Two monks at the monastery experiment with cutting-edge technology, including a method of deflecting the lightning that has previously set the monastery ablaze. When one of the monks disappears and his lab is destroyed, foul play is suspected. Who better to investigate than the famed hangman Jakob Kuisl? But as the hangman and his family attempt to solve the mystery of the missing monk, they must deal with the eccentric denizens of the monastery and villagers who view the monks' inventions as witchcraft that must be destroyed at all costs.

This thrilling fourth entry in the Hangman's Daughter series features scheming monks, murderous robots, and the action and intrigue that never seem to cease when the Kuisls are on a case.

An awesome book well worth the read & credit.

I bought the first book on a fluke and loved every minute. Since then, I've listened to the whole series, and passionately awaiting the next issue.

Best in the series so far.

This one twists and turns, many nail biting scenes. Some parts predictable but all of it very entertaining. Need to start the next one right away.

All of these are amazing books

I am in love with this series. Each one is different and fresh, but has the same basic familiar characters we have grown to love. The story just gets better and better with each book. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to download and listen to the next one in the series. Everything about this is 5 star.

A great adventure

As the previous 3 books, this an interesting story. The characters are real and compelling. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Excellent

The fourth in the Hangman's Daughter series. All are excellent. Intend to read all of his books. You would get more reviews out of me if you didn't require so many words.

Okay but not as good as the rest.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If they have read any of the other books I would recommend they read this.

If you’ve listened to books by Oliver Pötzsch and Lee Chadeayne (translator) before, how does this one compare?

I listened to the other three "Hangman's Daughter" books, they were all about the same in terms of narration, which is great.

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

Without a doubt it was Jakob Kuisl. Simon comes in second.

Was The Poisoned Pilgrim worth the listening time?

Only because I enjoyed the adventures of Kuisl and company. Probably should have ended at 3.

Intriguing Mystery, Static Character

The mystery is intriguing because you get a glimpse of how crime and detective work (or the lack there of) was done. Which is why the hangman, his daughter, and his son-in-law, do the investigation. The hints to the criminals were well done because of the foreshadowing and the clues.

Unfortunately, if you follow the series up to now, there are little changes with the characters. After the many attempts on their lives from previous adventures, you would think the characters would learn to be more cautious and discreet but nope, they happily go to their almost doom because they completely forgot about the dangers that happened before. A careless whisper here, a knocked over object there. More damningly, as the dangers mount up, Magdelena keeps getting distracted with the mysteries that she endangers the family she made with Simon. They all make it up in the end but the many avoidable problems they caused for themselves is exasperating.

None will compare to the 1st

3 1/2 ⭐️ It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book in this series. I have all of them in audio and Kindle. While I enjoyed this story, it’s kinda like the movies, you can never, well rarely ever, top the first one. I read The Hangman’s Daughter and have listened to the others. I will say that for translation, the audio is fantastic.
