Publisher's summary

Nathan Attis wakes up with no idea where he is, how he got there, or why his memories of the last few days are gone. He's more than a little perturbed to discover that he is dead, but it's not the end of the world.

Due to his being in the army, he gets a second chance at existence in a fantasy VR game called Adonis Rebirth. There, Nathan will get to live another life, one filled with heroic quests and epic adventures. A land packed with legend and glory, where anyone can be a hero.

But there's a problem with his transition into the game. His consciousness isn't loaded into a player character, but instead is transplanted into a beast who lives in the bowels of a mountain. Even worse, he finds out he is the end monster in a new limited-edition quest, where the first to complete it wins a unique prize.

Soon, hero players are going to come to kill him. He needs to find a way to survive the hero onslaught, all the while trying to discover how to reverse what happened to him. He needs allies, but it's hard to make them when you look like Nosferatu's ugly brother.

Nathan will have to master his skills and learn how to play as the monster - his second life depends on it.

The Audio quality was poor.

It is hard to enjoy any Audio Book if the Audio is not up to speed so I am not comfortable giving a review when it is difficult to tell
what could be if.

My apology to the Author the Audio needs to be redone and then will do a new review.

A great Idea With Okay Execution

A great Idea With Okay Execution

"The Monster Spawn" is the story of soldier, Nathan Attis, who dies in real life. His consciousness is downloaded into a fantasy VR game called Adonis Rebirth. The problem is that although Nathan is alive and well in the game, his consciousness was not transferred into a normal player. It was transferred into a monster character. Not long after discovering that, Nathan quickly realizes that it is open season on him by any and every hero questing in the game. To make matters worse, Nathan's monster instincts are constantly trying to influence him into doing monstrous things. Namely, killing and eating people. Clinging to the hope that there must be a way out of his predicament, "The Monster Spawn" has great potential to be a fantastic story. Unfortunately, The author didn't seem to see the same potential that I, the reader/listener did. "The Monster Spawn" is not a bad story, nor is it a waste of your time. It just could have been so much better.

The one thing that really bothered me about "The Monster Spawn" was the cliffhanger ending. Just when the story started picking up momentum, the author chose to end book one. That really bothered me. If you are going to continue a story across multiple books, please be more considerate of how you break the story. I prefer when authors finish the immediate story while continuing the grander story arc across multiple books.

Narrator, David Loving, does a good job with the story. The only shortcomings come from the author's choices. Finally, I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

meh

The story is interesting but the narrator has a bad echo in the recording that is hard to ignore.

He who fights monsters....

The Monster Spawn tells the story of a man that's turned into an NPC in a popular VR game that somehow can support the human consciousness post-IRL-death. However, our protagonist isn't the usual fantasy character spawned into the game: he's a monster, and one that can only be killed once. With the help of a few minions, we learn about this monstrous new character that might be the foretold fulfiller of an ancient prophecy.

Pretty fun, good characters, I look forward to seeing the crew in future installments.

Story is great

I’ll start off with my first comment. The story it self is great . Like the mc and the different approach to being trapped in a vr. It is shorter than I prefer. I think the author should combine two books in one set to make it worth the money. I do wish we could of seen/heard a bit more about the personality test that he took in the very beginning. Also I like how Book starts off with the character having no ability whatsoever. That’s the way any pc should start instead of being a special chosen one.

My issue is like a few his choice of narrator. Now the narrator has talent. Just this does not feel like his genre. I would suggest mystery. I’d have no issue listening to a mystery novel from this narrator.

too short and the information isn't comprehensive

the story isn't developed slow enough and the explanations do not cover enough the author should flesh the story out more
