Publisher's Summary

Hobbs is a professional thief who takes on a heist even though the money doesn't match the risk...but the woman behind the job does. It's a bad play that blows his world apart.

This novella is a prequel to The Soak, a searing crime novel that introduces an exhilarating new voice in noir fiction that's as sharp, cruel, and relentless as the story's unforgettable hero.

Short and to the point

This was a fairly quick listen, and for those new to the lead character (like me), it didn't take long to suss out his nature and the situation he was in.

This reads more like an old noir story, with the dame falling for the bad guy instead of the private eye.

There isn't much else to say without spoiling things, but I enjoyed the main character, the female interest and even a couple of the bit players. Not knowing the world this story is written in, I can't get too much of a grasp on some of the others, but I'd be interested in hearing more.

A Good Introduction To The Soak

The Lucky Dime was a good noir prequil to The Soak. It was very well done but I want to hear more. This story I think is giving the listener a little back story about Hobbs. It was almost like an introduction. I'm curious as to where the author Patrick E. McLean goes with the novel.

I liked that he narrated his own book. He did an excellent job. He has a nice voice with good voice inflections. I can see why he read his own book. Hopefully The Soak will be available soon.

well worth your money

I was gifted this audio ARC for a honest and unbiased review from the author/narrator.
I enjoyed that the author Patrick E McLea narrated his own work. His voice made the story flow in my head nicely. I hope The next book Soak is as good and McLea narrated that one as well.
Great buy for you, worth a credit.

A winding web of suspense..

Character development in this novel is simply astounding. But don't for a minute imagine you can think ahead and guess the plot. It twists and turns like a flag flapping in the wind. You'll never see the next thing coming. Suddenly, it's just there. .. A Great into to what seems like an outstanding series.. Can't wait for the next one..

A Short Complete Mystery - Must Pay Attention ツ

The Lucky Dime

Patrick E McLean

I enjoy mystery/thrillers. I wondered how McLean would fit an entire story into 45 minutes. He did so with ease starting at an orthodontist convention and ending with the bang. In these 45 minutes we live through a heist by Hobbs and are tempted by what I imagine is a full-length sequel called the Soak.

For some reason I was not able to get excited about this book. It had all of the elements needed for a great 'whodunit'. Perhaps because my mystery/suspense tendencies are more toward the genre of current espionage.

I've no doubt that any mystery/thriller listener will enjoy this listen.

The author also narrates this book and that can go very poorly, however in this case Patrick McLean knew his characters intimately and was able to perform them in a way that was very precise. I liked that.

Too short.

Any additional comments?

This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.

The story was very shirt, and I was kinda fine with that since I read the reviews saying it is very quick paced and gets to the point etc. But when I actually listened to it, I found it was actually not true. I felt at least a quarter of the time was spent on unnecessary dialogues and such. This book was clearly written as a introduction to the main character and a teaser for the main book, The Soak.
