A thirty year old science experiment, about to be revealed...
Seven people, marked for death, not for what they know, but for what they are...

THE LIST by JA Konrath
History is about to repeat itself

THE LIST is a bit of a departure for Konrath, who is known for his Jack Daniels mystery series. It's a technothriller about a group of ten people who each have tattoos of numbers on the bottoms their feet, and don't know why.

One of them, a Chicago Homicide cop named Tom Mankowski, has had one of these strange tattoos since birth. When he investigates a violent murder and discovers the victim also has a tattooed number, it sets the ball rolling for an adventure of historic proportions.

To say more would give away too much.

Like the Jack Daniels series, THE LIST combines laugh out loud humor with serious suspense and thrills.

ABOUT THE KONRATH/KILBORN COLLECTIVE
The Konrath/Kilborn Collective is not a series. It's an ongoing collection of horror and technothriller novels that can each be read as a standalone. Some feature characters who appear in more than one story.

If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, the Konrath/Kilborn scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.

THE LIST by JA Konrath
Scary - 6
Violent - 6
Funny - 7
Sexy - 4
Crossover - Characters from
THE LIST appear in HAUNTED HOUSE and WEBCAM

"YOU ACT LIKE YOU HAVE A SAGGY DIAPER"

MAYBE HE'S RIGHT ABOUT THIS WORLD DOMINATION THING?
This is my seventh book by Konrath and the more of his stuff I read the more I like him. None of his writings will ever win any awards for being great literature, but I have never been a fan of great literature. The story is very far fetched and not too believable. It is escapism literature with lots of lol moments. Think more in terms of John Scalzi. I can't really mention the characters, as that is part of the story concept and could ruin your listening ahead of time.

This is a quick read that won't tax your mind much. If your up for a light funny read give it a shot.

One more thing. I usually don't comment on other reviews, as everyone has a right to their own likes and dislikes, but toward the bottom of the page one reviewer who seems to be some type of homophobe goes on about two characters being homosexuals. Number one, if there are homosexuals in the book, I don't see how that would detract from the entertainment value and fun there is in listening to this book. Number two, if there are homosexuals in the book, I totally missed it. There are two guys in the book, Roy and Bert, who start out hating each other and who end up best buds and there antics are some of the funniest parts of the book. I am not giving anything away here, it is pretty obvious from the start how this relationship is going to turn out. Parts of the book are predictable, but that is part of the fun and there are parts that will surprise you and that is fun too. If joking around with a friend of the same gender makes you gay, then call me queer.

Bill: How's if feel to get your ass kicked by William Shakespeare?
Tom: It's better then reading your plays.

"THE LIST IS ON MY LIST, LAUGH OUT LOUD"

I laughed out loud more than a few times, which is rare for me, I mean, it is a audio book, c'mon. Well written, decent flow, pretty good performance by Ben. It had good action too, kept me un suspense adn maintained some mystery. I have 2 of these books now.- Origin, and the List and I rate them about equal with this one much more funny and Origins more frightening. It is a few years old now and while a sequel was setup i guess there is none, anyone know? Is there a way we can message others on here or see comments on our comments?

"Suspend Disbelief? Warning: Spoilers in This Review"

Lobectomy anyone? Oh yes, the author goes there. I actually liked the beginning of this book . . . until the author attacked my brain by introducing clones of long dead and lost historical figures such as Joan of Arc and Attila the Hun, amongst others. The events in this book are pre-Loiuse Brown, born 1978. I borrowed a hard copy and speed-skimmed. Clones like Thomas Jefferson are mainly "good guys," whereas those considered "evil" by Western norms are "bad guys." Attila of Asia and a Native-American clone are despicable. That's not all. The plot becomes more unbelievable as the hero clones circumvent the police, Secret Service and other Federal alphabet-soup agencies. Before the conclusion, two dozen or more clones of the antagonist appear in scientifically and medically impossible conditions. I gave the writer 1 star--for completing the book. The narrator was good so added the second star. I wrote this, because I'm seeing many lower starred books without commentaries. Perhaps others who rate books 1 to 3 star will share their thoughts.

"Becoming one of my favorite authors!"
Where does The List rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I had read Origin and enjoyed it so much, I decided to try The List, and I wasn't disappointed. I love fast-paced, fun thrillers, and that's exactly what this was. Benjamin L. Darcie brought the characters to life with his excellent narration, and the author combined a great sense of humor along with zippy pacing and a twisty turny plot to create a super enjoyable experience.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Joan -- a truly gutsy heroine.

Which character – as performed by Benjamin L. Darcie – was your favorite?

Roy and Bert -- "Slug bug yellow!"

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Laugh!

    Any additional comments?

    More, please! Keep writing!

"What is not to LOVE ??????"

I can't think of anything I didn't enjoy about this book. It's the 2nd time I listened to it and it was GREAT both times. Lots of laughs (Roy & Bert especially) and fast paced.

This was a fun mystery! can't help but to get caught up in finding the villain! So many suspects and so little time to do both jobs! I look forward to the next adventure.

    "Lethal Weapon 5?"

Even with the glaringly obvious resemblance to Riggs, Murtagh, Goetz and Rene Russo's character, I was pulled in from the first chapter. The storyline is ridiculous and the ending; although not predictable, still silly. I truly enjoyed this romp on the fun side. PETA people shouldn't read as animals were hurt in the writing of this story.

All joking aside, I do recommend this book. I hope a sequel is done or is being written.

    Slainte!
