Publisher's summary

They were the young ones, the bright ones, the ones with the dreams. From the Nazi-prowled wastes of North Africa to the bloody corridors of Europe, they honorably answered the call. War - it was their duty, their job, their life. They marched off as boys and they came back - those who made it - as soldiers and professionals forged in the heat of battle....

Most books are "thrillers." W.E.B Griffith writes

What made the experience of listening to The Lieutenants the most enjoyable?

It easily and interestingly relates to real life in the military. Not a "thrill" to be found.
"Thrillers" are boring and stupidly implausible.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lieutenants?

Nothing specific.

Have you listened to any of Eric G. Dove’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He was ok.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

Cut all music. It detracts and is unneeded.

ENJOYABLE

I like Griffin’s writing. Enough detail to paint a full picture without so much it becomes more about the description than the picture. He is a good talent.

The performance is fine. Narrator has a good ability to aurally differentiate among several characters in conversation. He does have a problem, however. He has not been schooled in pronunciation of German place names - at least as pronounced by the military - or military terminology. For instance, eight p.m. in military time is ‘twenty-hundred’ not “two thousand”. The military side of Frankfurt’s airport is pronounced by any soldier as ‘Rhine MINE (Main), not “Rhine Mawn”. These mistakes screeched in my ear like fingernails on a blackboard. The saving grace is that they were infrequent.

Not bad.

The accents he uses for the various characters is somewhat annoying and Craig Lowell sounds like Keanu Reeves.

Like "M-A-S-H", loved The Lieutenants book one.

This was my first W.E.B. Griffin book and I absolutely loved it. It was similar to the t.v. series “M-A-S-H” where you got to know the characters, their heroics and their failures in their military and personal lives. I loved the character Lowell who was a rich kid that was drafted into the Army and in his teens.

The book gives a great image of military culture and the brotherhood of soldiers. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! So glad I found this author and this book.

Eric G. Dove was a great reader/performer too!

Integrates lives and careers

Pleasant and realistic. Ordinary lives mixed with extraordinary ones. Accurate historical markers and events bring the narrative to life. I was sorry that it ended.
