Publisher's summary

It's 1995, and life is great for Washington, DC, intern Trent Norris. But life can change in a moment - and does when Trent becomes the prime suspect in two murders and a slew of other crimes. Overnight he becomes the most wanted man in America.

Trent has to find a way - any way - out. He holes up at the Watergate on a senator's dime and enlists a call girl as his unwitting ally. But with the media eating Trent alive, he doesn't have long before they catch him.

From the tony clubs of Georgetown to murders on Capitol Hill, The Intern has all the twists and turns of a classic DC thriller, with an added comedic flair.

Critic reviews

" The Intern is smart, funny, and tough. Its characters leap off the page. It's one of the best mysteries I've read since Christ was a cowboy. If Raymond Chandler came from Missouri, his name would be Dale Wiley." (Kinky Friedman)

Somewhat Entertaining

This book is not the best “political thriller," but at the same time it is not overtly terrible. I do like how it is set in 1995, I think setting the story in that era makes it a lot more fun, but it is written in first person- unfortunately, too many times the internal dialogue fell into the trappings of useless first person blither. Some parts are genuinely funny though, and I do like Trent Norris despite his ludicrous rationale. However, much of his tactics are pretty ridiculous. He is on the run, all of Washing DC and the country is on the hunt for him, but he decides that he doesn’t want to be a fugitive on his own. Therefore, he gets himself a call girl. Turns out this chick is someone he is vaguely acquainted with, but I mean, really?! You call up an escort “not to be your hostage,” but to be your companion while on the run so you’re not alone?? I can’t get over that aspect, so I can’t give this book more than 3 stars. As for the narration, it is not bad, and I have no complaints.

A fast paced mystery and a very enjoyable listen.

This audio book was narrated very well. The narrator did a great job bringing the different characters to life. The story was fast paced and after a few chapters it got really good and I couldn't stop listening. My only complaint was how short the book was but that's it!

Not bad

Any additional comments?

The Intern has aspirations of Grisham but falls a bit short. It isn't bad and it is an entertaining listen, but so many parts fall into place out of nowhere that it loses some realistic qualities for me.

The Intern

Any additional comments?

Short, light, humorous and entertaining mystery thriller. It took me a bit to really get into the story. It started to pick up for me about an hour in. As the story continues and the plot unfolds it turns into an entertaining listen. If you like a mystery thriller with a little bit of suspense, some humor and not to dark and intense this is a good choice.

It only takes one thing and your whole life can change in an instant. Trent Norris finds this out the hard way. Accused of murder he must figure out how to expose those who have framed him. Love the Mrs. Kravitz reference.

Peter Danbury did a really good job with the narration. Pleasant voice, very easy to listen to. Great character voices. Clear pronunciation and smooth even pace. I would definitely listen to him narrate more books. Honestly before the story picked up it was his narration that kept me interested and listening.

Gotta Love a great thriller with some humor

I really enjoyed this story. Told in the first person, with just the right amount of humor. The characters seemed real and the narrator brought them to life very well. The story had great flow and suspense. The mid 90's retro setting was perfect and made it fun to hear references to current events of that time period. It was a little short and I really wanted more (this is a compliment to the author). Will look forward to more from Dale Wiley. This book was offered free on Audiobook Boom for an honest review.

sounds like a made for TV movie

I really struggled to finish this book. Peter Danbury did a good job and is the reason I finished the book. I would swear I saw this book on TV made into a movie.

A Great, Quick Suspense Tale

If you could sum up The Intern in three words, what would they be?

Conspiracies. Humor. Resolution.

Any additional comments?

The Intern isn't your typical political thriller. There is no CIA-like quasi-government agency or a deep-dive into the underbelly of Washington D.C. Everything just starts with a phone call and a bad, but understandable, decision by Trent. It's all completely by chance and the action snowballs from there.

I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. I never request a book that I don't think I'll like and, usually, I'm right. I was in this case, as this was a fun, fast read. Trent was a relatable character and while the ending was a bit on the side of unbelievable, the ride was one well worth taking. And I loved the humor. Sometimes, you're just not in the mood for a dark, hard-nosed mystery/thriller and this is the book you want to read during those times.
