Wow, really does justice to the Holmes canon!

Better than I could have hoped. This listen was just great. There are a few things that die-hard Conan Doyle fans might point out as deviating from the master, but the excellence of the story and its telling can't be denied.

Dull and Preachy

I enjoy mystery novels where the chances of guess the solution are null. For that part of the story it's all right. The problem I had with this book is that it really is far more worried about modern view of social problems of this period London then with say the story. Charles Dickens would have approve of the age spent on worrying about the fate of the street children but that is not in keeping with Sherlock Holmes. The book seems obsessed with fitting itself into the Sherlock Holmes story; not as the original author did by the need to refer all the time to the other stories and event and not just worry about the story. In turth the mystery seems to be second fiddle to Mr Horowitz social agenda and Mr. Horowitz need to put the story in the Sherlock Holmes's timeline.

I suggest pasting.

One of the best

Beautifully written and phenomenally well performed. The story, the writing, and the narration have to be among Audible's best. It is so exciting that Audible has been able to retain the likes of Derek Jacobi to read the text. It makes the prose doubly entertaining.

Good Story, Fair Performance

Liked the story well enough but the voice used for Sherlock was very distracting. It was not a voice I would ever attach to Sherlock in all the formats and stories I have heard/read. It was much too high and squeaky to be effective for the character at all. Too bad -- it really was distracting.

nothing like the original stories

For a guy who calls himself an expert its nothing like what the creator would have written. he would not have had Watson speak about himself that way or gone off rambling.

Intriguing plot!

Exciting plot with mysterious characters & events intersecting for a thrilling mystery. Horowitz is as good a crime detective as Sherlock. Superb narration completes the performance!!

Horowitz was the perfect choice

Sherlock Holmes is in great hands. He truly captured Conan Doyle’s style but also infuses the story with his own signature brand of inventive cleverness and dry humor. Jacobi is perfection.

My favorite Sherlock Homes novel

I have read all the Holmes stories I have been able to find, no matter who writes them. This is so wonderfully constructed I was enthralled.
I also listen to ANYHING Derek Jacobi reads. For me, this audio book is the best of both worlds.

Exceptional Narration

Anthony Horowitz does not disappoint in this iteration of Watson's Sherlock Holmes. I'm a bit of a fanatic about anything Holmsian, and pretty accepting of even the hackiest of offerings; but this is truly top notch. He captures the flavor of the originals so well. After reading /listening to the Hawthorne books and Magpie Murders, I was pretty confident I would enjoy this too. It was even better than expected.
And the narrator's portrayal of Watson immersed me in the world of this book from the first word-- unlike some books that take more time to suspend disbelief. His emotional range- general joviality and tenderness on one end, to muderous outrage on the other end - really served to make him so endearing.

Amazing, mesmerizing !!!!!

Anthony Horowitz strikes gold again with this one. He captured the spirit of Holmes like he had insight from Conan Doyle himself. Jacobi is an absolute delight and really brings the emotion into one of Holmes' darkest tales.

Getting Moriarty now.

Essential listening.
