Publisher's summary

The New York Times best-selling author of 'Til Death Do Us Part transports listeners to 1930s California, where glamour and seduction spawn a multitude of sins.

At the exclusive Burning Cove Hotel on the coast of California, rookie reporter Irene Glasson finds herself staring down at a beautiful actress at the bottom of a pool. The dead woman had a red-hot secret about an up-and-coming leading man, a scoop that Irene couldn't resist. Seeking the truth about the drowning, Irene finds herself drawn to a master of deception.

Once a world-famous magician whose career was mysteriously cut short, Oliver Ward is now the owner of the hotel. He can't let scandal threaten his livelihood, even if it means trusting Irene, a woman who seems to have appeared in Los Angeles out of nowhere four months ago. With Oliver's help Irene soon learns that the glamorous paradise of Burning Cove hides dark and dangerous secrets. And that the past - always just out of sight - could drag them both under.

really bad choice for narrator

Although I've enjoyed Underwood for other of the Amanda Quick books this one is really an uncomfortable fit. I ended up moving the speed up because I wanted to hear how the story came out but I still didn't really enjoy it.

Good story.

All the characters spoke really loud. But an interesting story so I stuck with it.

Good story; annoying audio

Like most Jayne Ann Krentz novels this is a fun story with lots of twists and turns. But the delivery was annoying. The problem was not the narrator, but the production. All throughout the performance the audio would stop, requiring physical intervention to begin listening again. If this were a CD instead of a download I would assume a faulty disc but since it's not I can only conclude it's Audible fault.

The Girl Who Knew Too Much

I was thrilled to find a new Amanda Quick mystery. I had read several Victorian era British novels which included pre-Scotland Yard detectives and their families.
It was fun finding this story in the early Hollywood era thriller. I will read this one again.

Great Vocal Talent, good story

I enjoyed the way the characters were read with a hint of old timey accents. the story was OK. not one of my favorite Amanda Quick stories but I'm interested to see where this series goes.

Disappointed

I love Amanda Quick but this book was lacking. It didn't hold my interest. Slow moving and weak characters.

Ok storyline. didn't like the narrator's voice

This story was a good mystery, but the voice was not particularly appealing to listen to.

Unexpected

This story was nothing like what I imagined it would be. I was delightfully surprised by the storyline and the characters. However, the narrator was a bit annoying with her choices for some of the character's voices. This was not the Amanda Quick story I have become used to, but I enjoyed exploring another genre under her pen. Looking forward to reading more about Irene and Oliver, a very interesting couple.

Romance novel first, mystery second

I don't mind romance thrown in with my mysteries, but this was obviously a romance novel, first and foremost. Which would have been fine with me, except for the pulsating sex scene, which I could have totally done without. Aside from that, I would have considered it a cozy romance mystery, but that blew that out of the water. Audible needs to reclassify this book, and put their sizzle meter on it, so people like me won't be caught off guard. Good grief, I could have been listening to this in a car, with kids or other people who didn't want to hear that crap.
I see it it's first in the series and I might want to continue with it, because I do like cozy mysteries, but I'm a little scared because of that one thing. However if that's all over and done with, then the rest of the books might be good.
