Publisher's summary

A gripping collection of fifteen BBC Radio full-cast dramas written by Bert Coules, inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories.

In the fifty-six short stories and four novels Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about his great detective, how many times did Dr John Watson tantalise us with references to cases which were never written about in full? These original adventures flesh out those unrecorded cases to wonderful effect.

Clive Merrison plays the great sleuth hiimself, with Andrew Sachs in the role of Doctor Watson. The star casts include Tom Baker, Jane Asher, Tim West, Toyah Willcox, Lindsay Duncan and Mark Gatiss.

The stories in this collection are:

The Madness of Colonel Warburton
The Star of the Adelphi
The Saviour of Cripplegate Square
The Singular Inheritance of Miss Gloria Watson
The Abergavenny Murder
The Shameful Betrayal of Miss Emily Smith
The Tragedy of Hanbury Street
The Determined Client
The Striking Success of Miss Franny Blossom
Thirteen Watches
Peculiar Persecution of Mr John Vincent Harden
The Ferrers Documents
The Remarkable Performance of Mr Frederick Merridew
The Eyes of Horus
The Marlbourne Point Mystery

Doyle Would Be Pleased

The inclusion of these case names in Doyle’s stories was always thought provoking. Bert Coules did a fine job giving them life, and the fully cast production was a pleasure to experience. I appreciated that the end of each story has a production summary that includes a citation to the original Holmes adventure.

Brilliant new adventures written and performed with finesse and spirit!

Just enough left to the imagination to encourage a close listen, these new stories woven from the scant threads Conan Doyle drop-stitched throughout his famous tales, will enthrall the most hardcore Sherlock Holmes aficionado. The performances are intelligent, rich and impassioned with all the twists, turns, and emotional depth of the classics. The two-parter entitled, 'The Marlbourne Point Mystery' takes up the mantle of Conan Doyle’s famous stories and provides Clive Morrison and Andrew Sachs ample space to breathe fresh new life into Holmes and Watson, which the actors do masterfully well. The production team created a beautiful, dynamic setting for each new adventure, and despite a few moments in different stories where the verisimilitude of both production and performance necessitated a bit more amplification, the spell was never broken for this loyal reader/listener.

One of the best radio programs out there

I love how it sounds like a typical day in the life of....
Just conversations, walking, murder, eating. Etc.
It's the closet to, that I can get, to the "real life" of Holmes and Watson. Plus it has Tom Baker for anyone a fan of the Doctor.
Of course Jeremy Brett will always be my Sherlock Holmes for my visual and for my Holmes all together. But for listening, it's Clive.

Some people get it

Some people get it, some people understand. Through their love of the original work they have been able to gleam and grasp a deep understanding of Sherlock Holmes and all the characters who live in and revolve around 221 Baker Street, along with Lyndsey Faye and Loren D. Estleman , Bert Coules is one of the best Sherlock pastiche writers out there. The voices are authentic, the atmosphere is foggy, the stories can be dark but smart , the banter is great , Dr. Watson is capable and as loyal as every and Sherlock is of course his normal manic, brooding, clever self. Clive Merrison and Andrew Sachs are fantastic along side the other actors and the BBC sound production. For me the success of any work is founded heavily on "re-watchability", and it is safe to say I will defiantly be re-listening to these productions many times.

The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Highly recommend! Just like Sherlock on old radio shows or perhaps Rathbone or Brett. Beware Chapter 13 is part two to Chapter 16. Caution scene change without much notice. Excellent story lines one may not have published in the Strand.

A Very Worthy Sherlock

I would recommend this audiobook to fans of Sherlock. Better than anyone else I have read so far, at bringing Conan Doyle’s character to life once more. Not quite Conan Doyle’s depth, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
