Publisher's summary

Dead Space, 2401 AD

Kyle Tanner is about to die. Alone, floating in a vacsuit only a few million kilometers from a massive, uncaring sun, he has barely enough time or juice to get out a distress signal before either his oxygen runs out or he succumbs to the radiation.

When the CCF sent investigator Kyle Tanner to SOLEX One, a solar energy harvester past Mercury, he thought it would be an open-and-shut murder case. A crew member was found dead, minus his head and hands. Not the worst Tanner has ever seen, but the deeper he delves, the more nightmarish it becomes. A shadowy figure, bleeding from his hands, assaults Tanner in his quarters. Then two more turn up dead, missing their heads and hands as well.

With no one to trust and everyone a suspect - even the intriguing chief engineer, Shaheen - Tanner must navigate a crew on the brink of madness to uncover a conspiracy that could threaten the whole of the human race. Even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice...

Is it hot in here, or is it just me?

What made the experience of listening to The Furnace the most enjoyable?

Almost all of it. This is a very good offering. Started out abit slow, but had a good build, and resolution, as well as intrigue. Didn't get bogged down in alot of scientific jargon.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. Was never sure about most of the plot line resolutions until the very end. Fascinating wind up and definitely left the door open for well deserved sequel.

What does Bernard Setaro Clark bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A very, very good reading of this story. Brought all the characters to life, and had enough space ( pardon the pun ) to breathe nuance and real emotion into the characters.

Made the listener care, which is the true sign of success.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Far too long for that sort of thing, but in theory, yes.

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this offering. Clearly somewhat of a scifi opera, but with gritty characters and realistic situations ( for the most part.)

Best narrator

This book is amazing and interesting, and the narrator is amazing, especially with throwing his voice to fit each person.

Pleasantly surprised. An unusual setting. Whodunnit with twists.

I thought it was better than a four due to what I consider some nice twists both in the SF and murder mystery genres. Some plot weaknesses, & not perfect narration, but easy for me to overlook. The overall listening experience for me was nicely intriguing. I listen to many SF books & was refreshed by this one. Review by Rick.
