Publisher's Summary

Never before on audio! A number-one national best seller about a man who wakes up from a five-year coma able to see people's futures and the terrible fate awaiting mankind in The Dead Zone - a "compulsive page-turner" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Johnny Smith awakens from a five-year coma after his car accident and discovers that he can see people's futures and pasts when he touches them. Many consider his talent a gift; Johnny feels cursed. His fiancée married another man during his coma, and people clamor for him to solve their problems.

When Johnny has a disturbing vision after he shakes the hand of an ambitious and amoral politician, he must decide if he should take drastic action to change the future. The Dead Zone is a "faultlessly paced...continuously engrossing" (Los Angeles Times) novel of second sight.

What the Critics Say

"Originally published in 1979, this title is finally available for the first time as an audiobook, with actor James Franco narrating... Franco's impressive acting talent is on full display. As the troubled Johnny, he narrates with restraint and melancholy. As Stillson - an amoral businessman who cons his way towards the presidency - Franco oozes menace." (AudioFile)

    "Another Great Listen!"

Through the years I have read everything by Stephen King and now I am re-reading everything, but audibly. The Dead Zone was almost totally forgotten (since I'd read it so long ago) until I listened to it. Couldn't stop listening! King has the ability to make the characters into my dear friends, or just people I know. Incredible ability.

My favorite audible book EVER has always been Frank Muller's reading of The Green Mile, but the Dead Zone is right up there at the top of the list and James Franco does a wonderful job of reading it. Thank you for keeping me enthralled and it's a pleasure to be re-reading all of Stephen King's books............on to Duma Key.

    "Chilling"

I read this years ago, and couldn't resist the release of the audiobook. Though he became famous for his early horror tales like Carrie, this one is more similar to Mr. King's later works, where that feeling is more implied or psychological.

Playing around with the semi ethical question, "if you could go back in time and kill Hitler, would you?" Mr. King weaves a tale of a good man searching for his own life, in spite of extraordinary gifts. Although originally published in 1979, the feeling of unease is multiplied as memories from last year's election season come to mind, as though foretold.

"Franco hit the mark, but it still didn't resonate"

The title says it all. James Franco was spot on with his performance and I hope we'll have the chance to hear him again. But overall the story didn't really stand out at King's best work. It felt like a mix of Doctor Sleep and 11/22/63, at least in parts. And it never held my attention like Joyland or the Mr. Mercedes series. I will say that it doesn't feel dated. It's set in the 70's but doesn't feel 40 years old.
Worth a listen, but I wouldn't put it top of the list.

Fea co may be a fairly good actor but he is a very dry narrator. Could not listen to his voice.

    "Still an amazing book."

I had read The Dead Zone when the book originally came out, as I have done with all Stephen King's books. In the past year or so, I have been listening to them all on audio books, and the experience is like running into an old friend after many years apart. It had been so many years since I read the book originally that I had forgotten quite a bit of the story, thus it was almost as if I was being introduced to the story for the first time. I still found the characters vividly drawn, the tale expertly woven, and the journey through the book enhanced by James Franco 's inspired narration. I have NEVER been disappointed by one of King's stories, and The Dead Zone is no exception. If anything, it was better the second time around.

"Really good narration!! Loved the listening experience"

if you're looking for a review on the story then read some on amazon...it's King which means great writing and engaging characters.
I more importantly wanted to rate James Franco's performance since the narrators make the biggest impact when we choose through audible. He was fantastic. Franco had a great range of characters and his lazy easy style was so pleasant to listen to. Some narrators scream or get too into portraying some intense emotion and it puts me on edge (the narrator for "It" for example) but Franco was just right.

I recommend this! We need more talented actors who know how to tell a story reading for audible, it's such a treat!

Good story. Not Mr. King's best, but still a good story. James Franco made a good story almost painful.

    "Great story, terrible narrator"
What made the experience of listening to The Dead Zone the most enjoyable?

I love Stephen King and have read everything of his at least once. Lately, I've been going through his list and listening to all his novels on audiobook. His stories are always wonderful and imaginative.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dead Zone?

This book came out on audiobook at a pretty good time, considering all the political strife America is in today. Much of the novel discussing the political career of Greg Stillson stood out to me.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of James Franco?

Anyone. Honestly anyone would have been better. He is terrible. He sounds like a child with a head cold and a mouthful of peanut butter. He reads much of the book like it is the most boring chore on Earth. If I had not already read the novel, I wouldn't have been able to pay attention to this tale.

    Any additional comments?

Please never let James Franco narrate another novel.
