Publisher's summary

Ten years ago, six-year-old Catalina Mateo hid under the porch of her family home while a knife butchered her mother and a bullet killed her father. Now a rough-sleeping orphan, Cat arrives at the house of Detective Jonathan Stride, pleading for protection. Drenched in the icy waters of Lake Superior, she claims to have narrowly escaped a cold-blooded killer.

Stride's raw instinct is to protect Cat, whose late parents' case - and his personal guilt associated with it - still sends a shiver down his spine. As a result, he takes the troubled teenager under his wing.

But Stride's partner, Maggie Bei, is not convinced. She doubts the sincerity of this beautiful young streetwalker who has so easily won Stride's trust, and now sleeps in his house with a butcher's knife under her pillow.

As Stride continues to care for Cat, Maggie's suspicions solidify, and a single question occupies the void between them: Should Stride be afraid for, or of, this terribly damaged girl?

Didn't disappoint

If you could sum up The Cold Nowhere in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing, captivating, suspenseful

What did you like best about this story?

Brian Freeman's books always grab my attention and are the kinds of stories I find it difficult to walk away from. I have to admit that being a Minnesotan I like the fact that his stories take place in Minnesota locales that I am familiar with.

Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Joe Barrett is probably one of my favorite narrators. His voice is so easy to listen to, soothing rather than grating. He distinguishes between different characters without over doing it.

Any additional comments?

It grabbed my attention from the very beginning and never let it go.

4.5 Stars Another Great Installment To The Series

Stride's back, and he hasn't lost a step in dealing with the baddies. Maggie's attitude and behavior makes her a questionable partner for him, but Serena's return gives power to this crime-solving twosome. Using Duluth and Grand Rapids as familiar backdrops are enjoyable and add great color, and Brian Freeman sure knows how to spin a tale without giving away the conclusion. We need more Stride thrillers from him.

Joe Barrett one of my favourite narrators was outstanding with the delivery of the story.

As always, fantastic story

One of the few authors that continue to keep me guessing to the very end. Superb writing, excellent narration, time well spent.

Bravo!

Held my attention and left me wanting more. Brian Freeman is a talented author and tells a good story. Joe Barrett did a great job narrating too. Worth the effort!

A true Freeman fan truely dissapointed

Gillian Flynn, Val Mcdermid, Anne Emery, Nora Roberts, Tana French. These are a few of my favorite authors - male or female. I preface the statement with that because this had a degree of femininity that was uncomfortable to listen to. It was extremely emotional and I could barely get through the first part of the 2 halves. I stuck around to find out what stride was afraid to reveal to Serena - That was a big disappointment. Huge actually considering the build up. Also Kat's aunt was hiding a secret that was ho hum compared to the build up. This was a big attempt at multiple Red Herrings to throw things off. I was probably 2 hours off finishing and deleted the book from by library. Any other author wouldn't have made it that far. It should have been deleted through the first. This book was written to the point where the narrator had to do worse than normal with his dream yelling for Kat. It was very bizarre sounding. and not in a good way. I think this book should have been cut to five hours like "Turn to Stone" which I enjoyed thoroughly. Also - Should not be sold with the idea that this is a follow up as Turned to Stone. It's not.

I have many audio books by Brian Freeman - He has always received my praise - Until now.

I'm done.

Loved the Story

I thought this was one of the best of Brian Freeman's books. There were a number of twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and the character development was good. I also really enjoyed the continuity from the start of the book to the end. Details in the beginning turned out to be important in the end (I'm trying not to spoil anything!). This continuity made the book feel "complete" and "closed" with this particular case. I can't think of any open threads, which leaves the characters open to move on to the next case.

Not the best in the series but OK

HUGE Jonathan Stride fan, but this one was not his best in this series. I'll still buy the next one though. some good parts, no question, but it just didn't hold me like the others have. Still worth a credit.

Just couldn’t like it

I listened to the whole book but I had it in 1.6 just to get it over with. Absolutely hated the narrator which means I won’t be doing any of the other books by this author. His voice was anointing my breathy and the women characters were just awful. Also too much vulgar talk that was unnecessary. This was included in my audible membership. Would have been mad if I’d paid a credit for this book.

Best entry in series yet

If you could sum up The Cold Nowhere in three words, what would they be?

Past comes back

Any additional comments?

Brian Freeman really is at full stride in this book (definite pun intended). All of the regular characters are back together and having to face an awkward situation in their personal lives. The book is all about the past coming back to haunt everyone and an evil character trying to cover up previous deeds with bloodshed. I figured out who the primary villain was about halfway through, but that didn't take away from the excitement. It was very much a suspense thriller.

Please carry more Jonathan Stride mysteries

Would you listen to The Cold Nowhere again? Why?

Absolutely. Really enjoyed this book. My first Brian Freeman mystery and I really enjoyed it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jonathan is an interesting and complex character

Which scene was your favorite?

When Jonathan and Serena decided that it was time to move forward in their relationship

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely

Any additional comments?

I hope there will be more Jonathan Stride mysteries available in Audible. I'm a big John Sandford fan and felt this book was certainly equal to the Lucas Davenport series. The narration was a bit hokey though, and the Scandanavian accents more suitable for Saturday Night Live, but the narrator did a good job.
