Publisher's Summary

In this gripping thriller, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.

She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

When her former handler offers her a way out, she realizes it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.

Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialized skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's best-selling authors.

Critic Reviews

"Even with Archer's outstanding portrayal of Alex, secondary characters Kevin and Val still steal all their scenes, thanks to Archer's memorable voices. Pack your go bag and enter Meyer's breathless romantic suspense." (AudioFile)

I'll always read her stuff...but

What made the experience of listening to The Chemist the most enjoyable?

This was an easy read (listen) but I honestly felt it was overwritten. There were passages that went too long and too descriptive. I also felt like the "love story" was a bit forced and implausible. While we all expect a love story in Meyer's books, this was "too easy" and neither character resisted it much.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

For identical twins, there was more hierarchy between the brothers than seem natural. Kevin calling his TWIN "kid" was annoying.

Any additional comments?

While this was an easy listen and entertaining, if I were reading it, I would have skipped big paragraphs of description and "telling". She does a whole bunch of TELLING and not enough SHOWING. This makes sense for a Young Adult novel, but this was meant for an adult reading audience...thus why no mention of the vampire books on the cover......

Listened all night!

Any additional comments?

Awesome book. It is a good thing I am retired because I did not sleep at all because I had to find out what happened next. Some reviewers did not think the characters were well developed, but I must disagree. I believe they were very well fleshed out and were interesting people. The plot was intense but I cannot explain why without giving spoilers and I don't want to do that.

I loved the part the dogs play in the story. I wish they had been addressed in the epilogue because they were so lovable and brave. However, the book does not leave you hanging. It wraps up at the end but leaves the door open for a sequel, which I would very much enjoy. I hope the author has one in mind.

The narrator is excellent. There were no fake voices. There was not a jarring diference between female and male voices. She was not over the top and dud bit bring attention to herself and get in the way of the story. I was impressed and pleased with her performance.

Outstanding!!!

I am not a fan of the twilight series--but I loved the Host--one of my top 10 of all time. The Chemist was not what I expected--it was so much better. I will revisit this book. I found myself willing to give up some sleep to listen to a bit more. I love my sleep so that's a high compliment. I highly recommend. Einstein is my favorite character.

Reads like a cheap romance novel

This reads like a cheap romance novel with lots of corny cliches. I expected, and hoped, for better

First off. I adore Mrs Meyers

I quickly and excitingly purchased this book. It had S. Meyers name on it. I absolutely love ALL her writing. All before this book. The audio performance was awesome. But nothing could help the very poor story, Shallow characters, unrealistic approach to love at first glance and failed attempt at action. If this becomes a series. O help us. I like spy and conspiracy and sexual tension. But this book seems rushed at best. Not a good one.

Was not impressed.

This book was boring! I stuck with it because I thought it would have an amazing twist or turn eventually but no luck. It was a waste of time. Stephanie Meyers has a serious fantasy about clothes being ripped off in the heat of passion & big bedrooms. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Weird. Predictable and awkward.

I don't know how else to describe this book. The protagonist learned some of her spy craft from reading fiction. The romance between two of the main characters seems forced and unnatural for a long long time. Lots of over used plot devices are present.

Yet when I was eventually able to turn the analytical part of my brain off and just listen to the story it was moderately enjoyable. The doc at the end, and the dogs throughout were a highlight (if an awkward inclusion). Someone suggested it may be chick lit and I'm inclined to agree.

Interesting story Stephenie Meyer knows how to write and keep the readers attention. Ellen Archer's narration is supurb
