Publisher's summary

Phryne Fisher is back - as smart and as sassy as ever.

Phryne Fisher, her sister Beth, and her faithful maid Dot take a trip to an amusement park with Phryne's two daughters Ruth and Jane. But in the dusty dark Ghost Train, a mummified bullet-studded corpse falls to the ground in front of them. Digging to the bottom of this long-standing mystery takes her to the country town of Castlemaine where it soon becomes obvious that someone is trying to muzzle her investigations. Meanwhile, Phryne's lover Lin Chung has his own mystery to solve.

twisted sister

Phryne's sister is making her presence known ,and the very cool clam and collected Mr Lin Chung ,is playing peace maker between his family and the whoo's ,personally I could have lived with out this ,the slow pace of the elderly Chinese foke was starting to erk me.I never mind the appearance of the lovely Mr Lin but I just found myself wishing the tale would get back to our heroin .Stephine Daniels is never disappointing but having said this if this your first book in the sires your thinking of buying I would start closer to the beginning.

A good Phyrne story, but gets bogged down w side story

As with most of the Phryne Fisher stories, there are two main stories that end up converging. One involves a mummified body that Phryne is trying to sort out the origins of while fending off the usual warnings and threats to her life and household while she wades through the clues, and the second involves an old family feud between Lin Chung's family and another Chinese family. The former story is compelling; I found the latter story less so, and unfortunately Ms. Greenwood chose to make Lin's story take the lion's share of the book. It just didn't keep me as involved in the story as Phyrne's adventures usually do. I felt the spark was missing from much of this story. Stephanie Daniel's narration is great, as usual, but not certain I'll be returning to listen to this again many times. Just not my cup of tea. Typical nice scenes though with Phyrne's household members sprinkled throughout - just not enough of those scenes.

I wished I liked it better

What did you like best about The Castlemaine Murders? What did you like least?

I loved the Phryne sections, but the Chinese sections seemed too disjointed and were a distraction. It was like reading two books at once and it didn't work for me. I eventually started fast forwarding through the Lin Chung sections because they became less and less interesting as the book went on.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kerry Greenwood again?

Absolutely.

Do you think The Castlemaine Murders needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No thank you.

A visit with Phryne

This book is rather thin on plot (& it's rather convoluted) but rich with details about Phryne's life. In my opinion, the ones based around home are the most enjoyable so this book fits the bill on that account.

Miss Fisher Triumphs Again

Absolutely love this series and its characters. Greenwood captures your attention with descriptions that make you feel like you are present in each scene. Twists and turns, lust and romance, steadfast friendships are the icing on the cake for each novel in the Miss Fisher series. Enjoy!

Excellent Narration

Stephanie Daniel is excellent! She does multiple voices and accents easily. I'm addicted to the Phryne series - books and TV show. Lots of fun, mystery, and woman power!

Phryne wins again

I just love these characters and the feminist viewpoint of the author. So well written with a great vocabulary.

Probably my favorite of the series

The Castlemaine Murders features Phryne Fisher at her bravest and most intrepid, gives us a wonderful glimpse into her household routine and her relationships with friends and family. It also runs a skillful, entertaining, dual narrative of Chinese and British cultures and historical events. We get rich detail of Australia in the Gold Rush days; and the duties of an early 20th Century head of the illustrious Lin family, ably taken up by the delectable Lin Chung. Greenwood outdoes herself with plot and characters in this one. She’s at the top of her game. There’s a gorgeous new dress and a yummy considering cocktail and the finest dinner of the entire series.

Read by the late, lamented, Stephanie Daniel with her usual excellence and verve. It’s got a bang-up pulse-pounding finish. Not to be missed.
