Publisher's Summary

In Robert Ludlum's ground-breaking career, no other character so captured the world's imagination as Jason Bourne. He appeared in three of Robert Ludlum's own best-selling novels, his best-selling works to this day. Now, with the major motion picture adaptation of Ludlum's The Bourne Supremacy, the Ludlum estate has finally acceded to the demands of readers around the world, turning to best-selling writer Eric Van Lustbader to create a brand new Jason Bourne novel, The Bourne Legacy.

Jason Bourne, international assassin of deadly repute, was an identity assumed by covert agent David Webb. Retired from the CIA and now a professor at Georgetown University, Webb's life is finally his own, until he becomes the target of an assassin and is framed for the murder of his two closest associates. Fighting for his life against unseen assailants, the Bourne identity asserts itself, leaving Jason Bourne in control. Barely a half-step ahead of his nemesis and the CIA, who believes he has gone rogue, Bourne finds himself a pawn in a larger, far deadlier game.

What the Critics Say

"Scott Brick is one of the fastest-rising stars in the audiobook galaxy. His understated approach to each book serves him well, and whether he is handling a roomful of Russian generals or a series of dizzying scene changes, the listener stays with him for every word." (AudioFile)

    "The best Bourne yet"

I think Eric Van Lustbader actually writes a better Bourne story than Ludlum. The main character isn't as whiny. And this novel didn't drag as some of the earlier ones. Well done.

    "Massively Overwritten and Misogynistic"
Would you try another book from Eric Van Lustbader and/or Scott Brick?

    No

Has The Bourne Legacy turned you off from other books in this genre?

    yes

What didn’t you like about Scott Brick’s performance?

Mr. Brick has a good vocal quality but his habit of ending sentences with an uptick makes him sound bored. Also this book has characters from all over the globe. Mr. Brick's major indication of an accent, no matter which one, is to pronounce articles a and the as "ay" and "thee". It became an increasing annoyance as the overlong book continued.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Bourne Legacy?

Too much to list here. Mr. Van Lustbader can not write a sentence where ten will do. Worse, misogyny is rampant. The only two women are cartoon characters, sexual and treacherous, using sex to ensnare and kill. Every other woman in the book is a non entity. He assigns names to all of the minor male characters but simply labels the women as female terrorists. It's a prehistoric point of view that wears thin quickly.

    Any additional comments?

Obviously, not my favorite book but if you need a Bourne fix I suppose it will suffice.

    "better then the movie."

I jumped in on the legacy book after watching all the movies. I liked much more this world of Bourne it does connect to the big screen but in ways not so dramatic the the story keeps going and seems more grounded .

This is an amazing book just on its own. No worries if you have not encountered any other part of the story read this one and it will all make sence

Love the detail. Can't wait to read the set one. Wish the movies stuck to the book. If you think you know the story don't be fooled. Start from book one and see how different they are

    "Jason Bourne style continues..."

Continues in Jason Bourne style except for one thing. Jason's closeness to Marie (even calling her) is almost not existent. Kind of strange. But this is a different author. Have to remind myself of this...

Interesting story though. Scott Brick gives a great performance!

"More details from movie won't be found here."

This is a GREAT novel, BUT if you're looking to flesh out more details from concepts portrayed in the movie (as I was), you won't necessarily find them here. You'll have to find such in the screenplay, perhaps.

I was hoping to read more about the drugs that made Jason Bourne and his fellow agents into the physically and mentally super agents they were; but alas, I didn't find anything about that in this novel.

"Not as disappointing as others say"
    Any additional comments?

I love the Ludlum Bourne books and this one is still pretty good. It's not Ludlum, for sure, but it's still a good read/listen. I don't know what others were expecting, Van Lustbader isn't going to be exactly like Ludlum; but I think he did a great job. There is a lot going on in the story, but that's what makes it great. I listen while driving across several states on a regular basis and I really enjoyed it. Give the guy a break. It's still Bourne.

"Get rid of the sound effects and music!"
    Any additional comments?

The good job the narrator does is completely undone by the cheesy sound effects and added ambient “mood” music which is slipped in throughout the book during selected parts. I found this very annoying and distracting. Some of the vocal distortions they add also make it hard to hear, forcing me to rewind a bit. If I wanted sound effects and music I would simply watch a movie!

    "Excellent audiobook"

The book is very well narrated, he has a nice American accent and is able to put feeling into the text where necessary. This comes across much better than it did in film. I haven't listened to many audio books but I would recommend this one, I didn't want to stop listening!

"Some daft bits but a bit of a romp"

It is not clear if it is the sighing in the narrator's voice or the daft things the author puts into his protagonists mouths that were most irritating. All in all it was OK. Well, it must have been as I stuck it out to the end.
Just don't expect great writing. Bourne at one point walks into an apartment in which there is a grand piano... It is an example of what I mean. If you dont get it listen again...

I loved this audio novel, well-narrated and gripping to the end.

The only reason it doesn't get a full five stars it that there were a few holes in the plot. But for me Van Lustbader has managed to recreate the Bourne magic of Ludlum's classic creation.

    "exceptional"

With nail-biting suspense and heart-pounding chases galore, Eric Van Lustbader with great triumph continues Ludlum’s immortal Bourne series. In typical Ludlum style, the novel begins explosively and retains the breathless pace throughout,

Beyond the usual hijinks including car chases, incredible escapes, breathless feats of action and more, one interesting track this story takes is to explore Webb’s tragic past in Cambodia and how it converts him into the killer Bourne
