Publisher's summary

An earthquake in Masada, Israel, kills hundreds and reveals a tomb buried in the heart of the mountain. A trio of investigators - Sergeant Jordan Stone, a military forensic expert; Father Rhun Korza, a Vatican priest; and Dr. Erin Granger, a brilliant but disillusioned archaeologist - are sent to explore the macabre discovery, a subterranean temple holding the crucified body of a mummified girl.

But a brutal attack at the site sets the three on the run, thrusting them into a race to recover what was once preserved in the tomb's sarcophagus: a book rumored to have been written by Christ's own hand, a tome that is said to hold the secrets to His divinity. The enemy who hounds them is like no other, a force of ancient evil directed by a leader of impossible ambitions and incalculable cunning.

Warning: Vampire story read by boring reader

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Maybe someone into vampire stories. Reading it as a book might help, because the performance was painful. I can't exactly describe the problem with the narration other than that it was so slow and monotonous with odd enunciation of words that I had trouble concentrating and getting through the book.

What was most disappointing about James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell ’s story?

Not at all what I expected as someone who has enjoyed Rollin's books in the past. I should have read the reviews and will do so carefully before I buy another one of his.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christian Baskous?

I'm not sure any narrator would have gotten me to finish this book. I have been an Audible customer for over 5 years and this was the first book I was unable to complete thanks to the narrator.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Can't think of any.

Any additional comments?

The narrator is on my "never buy again" list.

I knew better than to buy a book w this narrator

What would have made The Blood Gospel better?

A good narrator - I could not even follow the story. He is slow and deliberate in his speech which slows the story significanlty.

Would you ever listen to anything by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell again?

Only if narrated by someone else

How could the performance have been better?

enough said

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Blood Gospel?

Did not get far enough into the story to say

A good read.

James Rollins has been my favorite author for a long time. This book in particular was a little farther from his other books. Even though it had most of the ingredients, I felt that it lacked that convincing X factor. His fantastical stories in Subterranean and Amazonia had a factor of conviction that this one lacs. It is just a story .. A good one, but a story.

What a disappointment!

I tried this on the basis of someone's recommendation of Rebecca Cantrell. I'm having to quit at about four hours because of the juvenile and hackneyed plot, infantile dialogue and horrible narration. I'm going to put Baskous on my list of narrators to avoid.

Something different, Not Sigma but a new path

Any additional comments?

This is not a Sigma book. It is by the same author, but is a unique path to the Vampire genre popular today. I don't care for the genre, but I really enjoyed this book as well as the followup "Innocent Blood". Good book overall. Wonderful narration

Not What I Expected, But Pretty Good

What made the experience of listening to The Blood Gospel the most enjoyable?

I didn't really know what to expect. James Rollins usually doesn't write this genre of book, but her sort of does. I know that sounds odd, but this is a paranormal adventure book? I'm not sure how else to describe it. Its along the lines of his usual format but throw in Vampires and some occult and you're in the ballpark.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

At times it did. The book was definitely interesting. The plot was good, it had a lot of detail and back story. The "world" was well thought out and quite descriptive. It felt real enough.

Which character – as performed by Christian Baskous – was your favorite?

I didn't have a favorite. This is the first book I have listened to by this narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Only at certain points. Then it would drop off and I would find a stopping point, so I guess I should have answered no.

Any additional comments?

I have purchased the second book to see if the story progresses. It has an interesting premise and sometimes the first book can have a little bit of a slow start. I hope the next book is even better.

Dont bother

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

another vampire, warewolf book and not a good one. The reader isn't that good either. Tried twice to listen to it, didn't get thru the first part either time.

Would you be willing to try another book from James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell ? Why or why not?

Loved most of James Rollins previous books

What didn’t you like about Christian Baskous’s performance?

too slow

Absolutely stellar

I love James Rollins's Sigma Force novels but was very hesitant to read/listen to this story because many times co-written books are choppy. That can be ok if reading, but when listening, it can be very disturbing to hear two different writing styles. This novel was seamless. It was as near to a perfect novel as I have ever read.

I was finally swayed when my husband said that I "must read" this novel. My husband despises vampire fiction (although he loves James Rollins). He was up reading the Kindle version well into the night for several evenings. So I downloaded it onto my iPod and turned it on. And was hooked from the first five minutes. I became anti-social because people were disturbing my reading/listening time. It took me less than three days to listen to this novel; all while working and taking care of busy kids' schedules.

I won't do spoilers because I go out of my way not to do so, but the main theme behind this book mixes the history of the Roman Catholic Church with that Eastern Europe and Masada and does so in such a way that each new plot twist causes a quick rewind to make sure that the authors really DID write that passage.

I have also now listened to the second book and am eager for the third in the series. I did find the second book a little stretched in the credibility department, but this is a GREAT series.
