Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Publisher's summary
George Stroud is a hard-drinking, tough-talking, none-too-scrupulous writer for a New York media conglomerate that bears a striking resemblance to Time, Inc. in the heyday of Henry Luce. One day, before heading home to his wife in the suburbs, Stroud has a drink with Pauline, the beautiful girlfriend of his boss, Earl Janoth. Things happen. The next day, Stroud escorts Pauline home, leaving her off at the corner just as Janoth returns from a trip. The day after that, Pauline is found murdered in her apartment.
Janoth knows there was one witness to his entry into Pauline's apartment on the night of the murder; he knows that man must have been the man Pauline was with before he got back; but he doesn't know who he was. Janoth badly wants to get his hands on that man, and he picks one of his most trusted employees to track him down: George Stroud. Who else?
How does a man escape from himself? No book has ever dramatized that question to more perfect effect than The Big Clock, a masterpiece of American noir.Critic reviews

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Finished to quick
This book had a very interesting plot and had the possiblity of going on with it and keeping your interest for several more chapters but all of a sudden it's over. Very disappointing.

A fun stylish imperfect noir
Any additional comments?
This is an enjoyable listen. Kenneth Fearing, who was a fine poet (and a drunk and a marxist) turns out to have had an excellent touch with fiction. The pleasures here are in voice and attitude as well as in the various portraits, some more detailed than others, of various mid-century new yorkers -- chain-smoking drunk-at-midday spouse-cheating 50s noir new yorkers. The writing is better than the story deserves. It's a slow developing murder story that leaves our protagonist in what should be a terrible bind -- but it lacks any suspense -- and the psychology behind the characters and situation becomes strained as well. The story ultimately resolves rather abruptly and without any punch.
But the narrative faults, which are not apparent until at least 2/3rds of the way, don't kill the book. It's worth a listen. The main character, George Stroud -- jaded, sardonic, self-contained -- is a very dry martini in human form. He's good company on an overcast day. Joe Barrets voice seemed too raspy to me at first, but he seemed to have a very good grasp of the characters, particularly Stroud, and brought them effectively to life. His performance grew on me steadily throughout the book.

A truly brilliant story.
Impossible to pidgin hole this tale, not a mystery in the traditional sense. It takes place in a large magazine publisher, where the hero gets involved with the bosses lover. He is caught up in her death and the details by which he extricate s himself are exhibited with genius. The whole business is a tour de force worthy of the highest praise.

Some regret
Despite the outstanding narration, I can't truly recommend this one with any enthusiasm. Suspense? Yes, near the end after a lot of build-up. Picky of me, perhaps, but having the protagonist's family names bring George, Georgette, and Georgina (with the women referred to as "George" by nickname as well!) I found grating.

Good Audio and Plot
The ending isn't as powerful as the tension in the piece, but it's still a great book!
