Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Mystery, 2013

The brilliant new novel in the New York Times best-selling series by Louise Penny, one of the most acclaimed crime writers of our time

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery’s massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.

    "Disappointing"

Louise Penny said she developed her characters based on people she would like to have as friends. But this book and the last one are focused on Gamache's issues with his boss. Boring.. Not something I want to read about. I hate departmental politics and I certainly do not want to read about them. Not my idea of entertaining reading. Very disappointed.

    "Focus on: dishonesty and secrets"

Three Pines does not enter into this volume -- a surprise! Taking place, rather, inside the closed world of a monastery, the whole atmosphere seems, to me, dark. And so is the storyline dark, and not just because there has been a murder committed. Perhaps that is why I did not give this one the full five stars. The production was also not up to the usual standards, I thought. At times the voice of Gamache was shared by other characters, and there was an uneven quality to the volume and timbre of the narrator's voice. I understand the story is told in segments and edited/pieced together, but it typically seems more seamless. This went up and down, and it's surprising how that can fracture a mood. Maybe that was a good thing, because the tension in this story among the police officers was really intense. I'm glad it's done. Amen.

    "Love These Books"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Beautiful Mystery to be better than the print version?

    NO

Have you listened to any of Ralph Cosham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He is magnificent as narrator. I will miss him in the upcoming Penny books. I suggest Ms. Penny try to get Jonathan Pryce to narrate her books going forward. The new guy is horrible with his depiction of characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I cried

    Any additional comments?

Lovely story and heart breaking ending.

"Too much stupid drama has entered these beautiful books"

I have read all the books in order and I am growing increasingly frustrated with the drama. Penny is getting away from detective stories with great personal characters and moving to cheap drama. Addiction is an important topic but I find myself cringing thinking she is just writing this to sell more books. I feel like I am reading the covers of the grocery store tabloids rather than fine fiction.

    "An Enjoyable Mystery"

The concept was unique and intriguing. The characters real and interesting. The intro and exit music added a beautiful extra touch. All in all a very enjoyable experience!

A bit too ethereal for this mystery reader.
Not for the light hearted. Will not read another for my bedtime story.

    "Fascinating!"

Loved this. Inspector Gamache is a fantastic human character. His observations, description, and relationships make him so real and fleshed out.

"Good & Evil, Right & Wrong, Friendship & Love"

The bonds of good and bad of working relationships, no matter what the environment can change worlds. Even when you think they can't be broken it only takes a small grain of evil to make that crack in the foundation and then pour water at and like a flower or a weed, it will grow. This book is an excellent example of that....

    "Good. Nice story continuation"

It was a pleasant change to have the story (spoiler) take place somewhere other than 3 pines. But I am ready for the conflict with the chief superintendent to be done with!
