A second chance to die

For his favorite charity, the high school drama club, Willard Platt fakes his own murder as an April Fool stunt. But the repeat performance later that day is the real thing. And some, including the next-door neighbor, say he deserved it.

Investigator (and ex-nun) Christine Bennett is haunted by the sad state of Willard's survivors. His widow roams the road at night. His son has a troubled marriage and bizarre secret life. Behind this suburban family's respectable facade, violent passions are seething. For this is not the first tragedy to strike them. Nor will it be the last....

When You Can't Quite Believe Your Eyes

When Chris Bennet sees her neighbor, Willard Platt lying dead in his front yard with a knife sticking out of him, she calls the police. She is appalled at the sight. She had recently had a run in with the grumpy old man at the grocery store, while she and her little son, Eddie had been shopping. Eddie had accidentally bumped into Mr. Platt with the shopping cart, and Mr. Platt nearly took her head off in a very threatening way. The check out clerk was not surprised and told Chris that was his usual demeanor and that no one liked the man who had sued many in the small town and had a reputation for being a jerk. Christine apologized profusely, to no avail, to Mr. Platt. She recounted the experience to her husband, Jack that evening. So the next day when she saw him dead in his front yard, she was greatly distressed. However, she soon learned that Mr. Platt was NOT dead at all, but that it was part of the local high school's Drama Club Scavenger Hunt. But later that afternoon, when Chris' neighbor called to tell her that Mr. Platt had been killed, Chris said, oh, no, that was an April Fool's Day Drama Club Hunt. But sad to say, it wasn't. What ensued afterward was the unraveling of fifty years of secrets and lies, that took Chris a long time to dislodge. This is one of the more interesting of the Christine Bennett Mysteries. Don't miss it!

Loved it Another in this series that didn’t disappoint

I love to enjoy the books in this series as they near the calendar occasions in the title. I read this one just before April 1st and it really put me in the mood for April fools day this year.

The story was terrific as usual with exciting twists and turns. The narrator always methodically pleasant and intriguing. Another overall winner in this beloved series.
