Publisher's summary

Don't miss the spine-tingling suspense and tantalizing romance in this thriller about a daring pilot caught in a race against time from number one New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown.

Rye Mallett, a fearless "freight dog" pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is often rough-spoken and all business, but soft on regulations when they get in the way of meeting a deadline. But he does have a rock-solid reputation: He will fly in the foulest weather, day or night, and deliver the goods safely to their destination. So when Rye is asked to fly into a completely fogbound northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr. Lambert, he doesn't ask questions.

As Rye's plane nears the isolated landing strip, more trouble than inclement weather awaits him. He is greeted first by a sabotage attempt on his plane that causes him to crash land, and then by Dr. Brynn O'Neal, who claims she was sent for the box in Dr. Lambert's stead. Despite Rye's "no-involvement" policy when it comes to other people's problems, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the intrigue surrounding his cargo...and to the mysterious and alluring Brynn.

Soon Rye and Brynn are in a treacherous 48-hour race to deliver the box before time runs out. With everyone from law enforcement officials to hired thugs hot on their heels, they must learn to trust each other so they can protect their valuable cargo from those who would kill for it.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Victor Slezak does an exemplary job of articulating Rye Mallett's and Dr. Brynn Lambert's emotions in this fast-paced romantic suspense.... The cast of characters comes to life in this narration, adding extra zing to the excitement in this audiobook." (AudioFile)

Victor Got His Groove

I am a 20 yr fan of author. Note: I do use 1.25x speed on all mysteries to match the authors intentions.
Since Ms Brown normally launches 1 book per year, I always look forward to her new one and this book does not disappoint.
Author continues to have her trade mark surprise ending, and the publishers summary is spot on.
If you liked this authors books, Friction and Low Pressure, then this story is up your alley.
Narrator, Mr Slezak is my all time fave for Ms Browns audiobooks. His opening in this book starts with a starter gun bang as he is an actor and has done many of Ms Browns books, of which I own all. My fave is White Hot unabridged, NOW at Audible, Smoke Screen and Lethal. Victor had not narrated Ms Browns books since 2011, so last years narration of Seeing Red was not his tops, but still a good listen. Like a pro, he picked up his cadence in this light mystery so the story was entertaining with his classic southern drawl.
If you are a new fan of Ms Brown, then this book will introduce you to the authors style of an entertaining adventure with a mystery and clever end.
Do not miss one of my top 5 faves, Mean Streak read by the great Jonathan Davis.

Brown has done it again

I’ve always enjoyed listening to Sandra Brown’s novels. This book followed her similar path to mystery and side romances. The characters were intriguing and the ending surprised us all. To top it off I love Victor Slezak and he did a tremendous job as always. Can’t wait for the next book!

This book was not for me

I have been a follower of this author in the past but this story was just not for me. I tried to get into this story but it was just too mish-moshy all over the place. The characters were not well defined; nor did any of them seem very compelling. I kind of thought the main protagonist was going to develop into a likable character but it was taking too long to get there and I quite frankly couldn't listen to any more.

Disappointed...a little

When I first started listening to this book I thought, have I already "read" this? Certain things seemed so familiar - the down-on-his luck pilot most notably. In researching Sandra Brown's audiobooks (I'm a HUGE fan BTW and pre-ordered this one) I found Low Pressure narrated by the same person. That's the connection. I see that Mr. Slezak has narrated many of Ms. Brown's books and I've read and/or listened to them all, but I find his voice on this book particularly annoying perhaps because he sounds exactly like Dent in Low Pressure and it makes it confusing.

I believe the book would have been more enjoyable had the reader adapted a different accent/tone or the book was read by someone else.

Narration

Hard to tell when a man was talking or a female, because the narrator did not use any different inflection.

Tailspin

Fairly good story. Unnecessary romance, not sure if furthered the story. Guess it sells. Liked the narrator.

More of a Romance toward the end

****This may be a spoiler alert, so if you are concerned about that, skip this review!!!!****

I read about 1/2 myself from a hard copy and listened to the other 1/2 on audio, switching between the 2 mediums every few chapters depending on whether I could read the hard copy myself or not at the time. I really enjoyed the first half to 3/4 of the book & was surprised by the twist at the end, but I felt like the romance part of it was just SOOOO cheesy- it really ruined the book for me. It ended up being the typical “sexy-man-who-has-emotional-baggage-and-is-closed-off-and-doesn’t-want-a-relationship meets similar woman and they have cheesy sexy scenes, he opens up and tells her everything, and they fall madly in love right way” kind of story. By the time I realized that this cheesiness wasn’t just temporary in the story, I was too far in and figured I might as well finish the book. I really wish I could give this more stars but I just can’t 🙁

Narrator can make or break

This is good book, I like the author, the story line was interesting. But the narrator sounded like he was sleeping thru the whole thing! I love southern drawls, but the book needed a different narrator.

No Surprise Here

Typical Brown book, interesting storyline overwhelmed by hours of needless, juvenile, and hokey dialogue that moves as slow as molasses … gonna be my last Brown gig … rather have a root canal ...
