Publisher's summary

Everything about the man is a mystery: The massive ranch in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming that nobody ever visits, the women who live with him, the secret philanthropies, the private airstrip, the sudden disappearances. And especially the persistent rumors that the man’s wealth comes from killing people. Joe Pickett, still officially a game warden but now mostly a troubleshooter for the governor, is assigned to find out what the truth is, but he discovers a lot more than he’d bargained for. There are two other men living up at that ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe. The other is new - but Joe knows him all too well. The first man doesn’t frighten Joe. The second is another story entirely.

The edge of destruction

To me CJ Box and his creative mind in telling a story is a leader of the 20th and 21st century mystery writers.
There always are new bad guys with a sprinkling of somewhat good guys. This story features the ultra rich trying to rewrite the rules for society, only to find that people generally cling to certain ways of thinking that aren't self correcting by spreading around cash rewards.
Joe's daughter is featured in this story, along with overzealous thinking exemplified by all players in her first major emergency that is built totally by a series of assumptions

Love C.J. Box's Books

Would you consider the audio edition of Stone Cold to be better than the print version?

It's the same. It's unabridged.

What did you like best about this story?

It is a good book, but it didn't seem to carry the last story forward. Joe Pickett was at a crossroads - especially concerning the overreach of the federal government and state government to a certain extent - but he seemed to digress. Anyway, still a good book.

Which scene was your favorite?

Not one in particular.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

another good book in the series

it's definitely helpful to listen to read these books and order...
lots of reoccurring characters so it helps you understand their backstory if you have read the books in order.... Missy is back even if it's only for a brief appearance she still is evil as ever and Joe and Nate are good friends... hard to see if they'll ever be able to transfer this to the TV show too much politically correct thinking for the modern Hollywood 2 use it to

C. K BOX is always a Good Listen

David Chandler is a terrific narrator! Joe Pick and Nate Romanoski are interesting.and well developed characters. I greatly appreciate that CJ Box does not fill his stories with needless gory details and details of sexual encounters.

Stone Cold

I read the first book in this series and liked it. But I haven't read anymore. Someone in our reading group recommended this. I think I didn't enjoy it as much as someone who has been following the series. There were people and events mentioned that I didn't know or understand their relevance. Good performance, though!!

Family Ties

Well written. For those following the series, the author links together lots of moving parts. A good storyline overall.

This book will have your jaw drop wide open. Twist in the storyline I did not expect. The author has done it again.
