Publisher's summary

Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the small Minnesota town of Deephaven, an entire family has been killed - husband, wife, two daughters, dogs.

There’s something about the scene that pokes at Lucas’s cop instincts - it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he’s seen in drug killings sometimes. But this is a seriously upscale town, and the husband was an executive vice president at a big bank. It just doesn’t seem to fit.

Until it does. And where it leads Lucas will take him into the darkest nightmare of his life.

Sandford deviates from his recipe!

I've discussed author John Sandford's recipe for writing his detective thrillers in earlier reviews. In this novel he goes outside the twin cities to a small town and the antagonists are not "normal" serial killers. Stolen Prey involves a Mexican drug gang. Lucas' and Weather's adopted teen daughter is my favorite character in the more recent books in this series. This book also has Weather and their two young children as significant characters. Richard Ferrone narrates as always. I awarded Stolen Prey 5 stars but it is not one of the four best books in the series. This book was released in 2912.

Trivia: John Sandford is a pen name. The author's name is John Clay who was a well known journalist when he released his first books in 1989.

Stolen Prey stole my day

What made the experience of listening to Stolen Prey the most enjoyable?

Knowing the characters was the best part of the book. Sandford kept in character for the history of the characters in his book. I am a HUGE Sandford fan and look for continuity in his Virgil Flowers and his Lucas Davenport series.

What did you like best about this story?

the entire book was the best part about this story. I like the idea of Davenport's family growing up and I get to be a part of this amazing fictional story. Lucas and Weather now have three children - Letty (adopted), Sam and a new baby girl. Letty gets to be a more active character in the book and in Davenport's life. The way Sandford is able to weave in the characters we know and love continues to delight.

Which scene was your favorite?

He achieves this by keeping the characters true to the nature that readers/listeners have come to recognize and love.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

nothing was wrong with the performance. Great, per norm for Ferrone. I am a Ferrone fan and have and will continue to listen to his narrations.

Interesting and vivid. Great performance...

Good for its genre... Two story lines add dimension to the book. Ending leaves the reader with questions about the hero and heroine of the story which adds a bit of a twist.

Sandford does it again. Second to none!

More a thriller than police procedural than previous "Prey" novels. All of the Audible books available for the series are notable and worth a listen. Lucas Davenport could easily have become a protagonist character that a reader/listener couldn't support or bond with over years with this series. But he doesn't. I couldn't imagine another narrator than Richard Ferrone, a personal favorite of mine.

Good Entertainment...

This was an enjoyable listen. A good, well developed plot. In the end I was left feeling satisfied. Ferrone, while having a a narrow range with regard to voicing, still maintains a steady pace that does not detract from the story in the end having sort of a neutral influence, which if you aren't enhancing is the next best thing. I thoroughly enjoyed the listen and look forward to the next release.

exceptional plot!!

I loved it! breathless plot and subplots. Davenport was out witted by not one, but three if the female characters. I was quite entertained.

john sandford NEVER fails

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

John Sandford has the dialogue down when it comes to law enforcement. He really gets it.
I'm married to a police LT and every time he hears parts of any Sandford book- he says it sounds exactly like listening to actual cops talk.
Sandford is was the first author to REALLY get me into reading reading. I get so excited every time he releases a new book! Keep it up!
xo

What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has a fantastic voice. :)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no, only because I can't listen to it while working. :)
