Publisher's summary

For the first time in unabridged audio!

A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy? Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land? Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heart.

Critic reviews

"As usual, Preston and Child deftly mix the real and the surreal, creating an atmosphere in which everything, for reasons we can't quite nail down, seems a tad off-kilter. Call it creeping paranoia, perhaps, or the dreadful certainty that something awful is about to happen. Whatever you call it, it's a recipe for success." ( Booklist)

Another Winner

This is another great one with Pendergast as the main character that sets things straight.
Exciting and never a dull moment. Recommend this to anyone who is a Preston & Child fan. As always the characters are well developed and connect together with style.

Spooky

This book frightened me and I am a senior citizen. In fact, I started reading it when my husband was out of town for a couple of days and I was alone at home. I became so spooked that I grabbed my pocketbook and two dogs, and fled to my daughter's house to spend the night. Thank goodness she lives only ten minutes away. I waiting until my husband came home and I could finish it in his presence. I needed a protector. Whenever I think back on this book, I still get a scared feeling. It had such a big impact on me.

I love FBI agent Pendergast and he is prominent in this book. He is brilliant and so different. I also like the young girl who plays a big part in the story. Strange and gruesome things are happening and no one can figure out what is going on. FBI agent Pendergast comes to the area to get a grasp on the situation. I can't exactly tell you what makes this book so scary, but it hit every terror bone in my body - people alone in the dark facing the unknown, being trapped in the dark, terrible things coming at you, hints of the supernatural and things that you cannot fight!!! Shiver, shiver, shake!! At some points it was too gruesome for my taste, but that could not stop me from charging forward to find out what in the world was going on.

Scott is great but ....

Scott is a great narrator but no one could do a southern drawl like Rene.

Loved this one

These two authors have created my favorite mystery series and, as usual, this one is outstanding. Scott Brick narrated this book beautifully. I don't always like his narrations. His talent doesn't match with the book he is reading. He can be melodramatic and it is annoying. But he is perfect for these authors. Thanks again guys for another totally absorbing read.

Pendergast is an addicting character

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The whole story narrated by Scott Brick is amazing. You will keep guessing and get intrigued through the story. And like I said on the review title, Pendergast is an one of a kind character. This is my first book on the series and it really caught me. I'm reading Brimstone now and enjoying every chapter.

What A Twist

I honestly did not see this coming, but it was a very well written story and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Still Life of Crows.

Enjoyable series, this one had some holes in the mystery and obvious mistakes in the writing, but it is a very enjoyable addition. The writing is also very descriptive and I can picture many of the scenes in my mind as clear as if I were there, the sounds and smells are very vivid. Pendergast seems to have quite an effect on most of the populace and I always enjoy how they all react to him. I still like the first two books best but I have found that my local library has the remaining series on audio and I am planning on finishing it. I always get a kick out of an author having characters read their own books in their story.
