Publisher's Summary

A riveting Thomas and Charlotte Pitt novel, in which Anne Perry again proves her mastery of the people, the mores, and the politics of the Victorian era she has made her own.

A general election is approaching and Thomas is called to monitor the bitter struggle for one crucial London seat. The Tory candidate is Charles Voisey, ruthless Number One of the Inner Circle and old enemy of Pitt. His Liberal opponent is Aubrey Serracold, whose wife, Rose, is passionately committed to a socialist agenda and a liability to Serracold as she is immersed in spiritualism.

Rose is one of the three participants in a late-night seance held by clairvoyant Maude Lamont, which becomes notorious when Madame Lamont's brutally murdered body is found the next morning. To Pitt's heavy burdens is now added the investigation of this baffling crime.

One of her best!

This book was extremely exciting, despite the fact that Charlotte does not figure largely in the story, as in Perry's other books about the Pitts. Emily is much more prominent in the tale, as she is close friends with one of the main characters. The complicated plot and the way it ties together is incredibly interesting. I really can't go into a lot of detail because I'll end up giving information away - but take my word for it, the connections between the police, the government, a secret society, the elections, the Pitts' vacation, and a well-known medium are astonishing. I also enjoy all the small subplots that Perry included in the tale, and the ending just left me wanting more. I hope that the situation will continue to be explored in the next Anne Perry book! Can't wait to listen to it!

Glad I stayed with it

I'm currently listening to the stories in this series - thoroughly enjoying each one. When this one started, I had misgivings about whether I would like it or not. I'm not at all interested in politics, which is why the beginning of this book put me off a bit. But because I'm enjoying the series so much, I decided to stay with it, and I'm glad I did.
This was the first Pitt book I listened to with Michael Page as the narrator. I was accustomed to Davina Porter's voice and superb narration. However, I must say, Mr. Page ranks right up there with Ms. Porter in my book.

Brilliant

Met expectation and more. Pitt is amazing and the best detective in all Anne Perry's books. I truly enjoyed it.

My least favorite Pitt novel

What disappointed you about Southampton Row?

The story was tedious.

Would you ever listen to anything by Anne Perry again?

Absolutely, this was only one of many stories and I really love her books. This was just boring and kept going and going and going. The last few chapters of the book were alright. But not worth listening to on audible. Had I read it in print I would have skimmed it in an hour and been finished with it. .

Can't turn it off

I've listen to all the Charlotte Pitt stories that are available didn't think I would enjoy another author other than Davina but Michael did a excellent job and the stories have been gripping I'm so sleep deprive. If you love mystery I recommend all of Pitt series I love them,Pitt is my favorite, a hard working husband and father you will cheer for him in all the books, all the others are well developed characters. All are most excellent
