Publisher's summary

PI Leo Waterman is back at it - investigating a very domestic crime that turns into a national nightmare in this upbeat, addictive mystery.

Why would a teenager with no prior record suddenly assassinate a city councilman? Retired PI Leo Waterman wouldn’t have bothered finding out if an old pal hadn’t asked. And after the man, who is also the boy’s grandfather, offs himself, the request becomes too personal to ignore.

But Leo’s girlfriend, Rebecca, thinks the investigation is too dangerous. Especially after Leo is beaten within an inch of his life. Fortuitously, however, the attack leaves him with a lasting clue about the case that the attackers carved into his chest. Now, this new lead brings Leo into the woods just north of Seattle to infiltrate the dark heart of an impressionable young boy’s sudden, violent turn - a white-power retreat that’s amassing an army for a far-reaching endgame.

What they have planned isn’t only putting Leo’s life at risk. Thousands of lives are going to be at stake. And the deeper Leo gets, the more he fears that he’s totally underpowered to save them.

Timely story

Another great adventure, although a little darker and a lot more dangerous. Timely subject matter, with what is going on in the country. This is a political story and I'm sure there will be certain readers that will complain loudly, with low reviews because they take issue with who white supremacists are connected with, namely the "alt right". Truth is truth, tho. It always amuses me when readers complain with " keep politics out of the story". Well, it's the authors choice on what to write about and what HIS views are for his characters. The ending either opens a whole new direction for Leo or he's hanging up his investigating shoes, i sure hope not! I've read every LW book, he is by far my fav "quasi" investigator with the most colorful, beloved crew.My one complaint, seems Ford fell into the lazy overuse of "___said" as he did in his early writing. Boy, thats irritating from such a talented author. Other than that, i completely enjoyed this book, full of typical Leo's irreverent humor, even in the serious subject. If you're offended by any criticism of "the right" in politics, just pass it by, it'll save you from writing an outraged review! Long live Leo! (With more books)

Leo and crew are the best

We love Leo and Ralph and George andall the rest of the crew at the Zoo. Patrick Lawlor captures Leo's personality perfectly and G M Ford's wit and one liners are precious and hilarious. I recommend these for anyone who wants a good mystery and a good laugh.
We got a little confused at the end when Ibrahim appeared in the story when he was killed off in the previous book. How does that work? Not a big deal, just seemed weird.

Characters coming back to life?

Leo is the dumbest and luckiest man alive. The book was decent. A HUGE problem is a character that died in the previous book was somehow alive at the end this book. WTH? Am I missing something?

sole survivor thoughts

story line was good, however Leo 1) threw the shotgun into the woods after blocking the Aryan compound, yet used it shortly before FEDEX truck exploded. 2) said he never married, yet spoke of ex-wife is several earlier books 3) Ibrahim was killed in Family values, yet was working with Rebecca again.. Otherwise, I enjoy the character and his unusual lifestyle.
