Publisher's summary

In these five tales, Sherlock Holmes is shown at the height of his powers: he co-operates with a young Winston Churchill in the famed Siege of Sydney Street, helps defeat a plan for a German invasion outlined in the Zimmerman Telegram, establishes a link between two missing lighthouse keepers and the royal treasures of King John, contends with a supernatural curse places upon an eccentric aristocrat, and discovers a lost epic of Lord Byron. But it is all in a day's work for the great detective, who continues to defy the odds and lives to fiddle and ratiocinate another day.

Feels just like Sherlock

Best thing I can say is it feels like the "real" thing. Love them all and revisit them often

New Sherlock or same old Sherlock?

What did you like best about Sherlock Holmes and the King's Evil:? What did you like least?

There were times that the story felt so legitimate that it seemed like Sir Arthur COnana Doyle had penned them himself. But there were times when Sherlock's flair was missing and it felt wrong. My favorite parts were tied to classic Holmes details - his ability to disguise himeself, for instance, or his willingness to bypass the law for justice. My least favorite story was the lengthy WWI tale that just wouldn't end.

Would you be willing to try another book from Donald Thomas? Why or why not?

Possibly. I would look at the specific stories to see if they are plots I would like.

Great - with a few caveats.

As a Sherlockian, I really liked this. As an actual historian, I did too. However, the author’s choice to often make this series aligned with very complex historical events required very long digressions into complex history and backstory. It’s fun for a historian - but likely quite a slog for those that just want to enjoy a mystery with their favorite Victorian detective.

It’s still well done - all in all. Would gladly read other Holmes pastiches by the same author.

Loved it!

I loved this collection, particularly the stories that weave Holmes & Watson into espionage tails from World War I.

Good batch of stories.

Will listen again. The stories were reminiscent of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with their complexity.

The game is afoot!

I’ve listened to this anthology on and off for the last week, and have to admit, Mr Donald Thomas is a worthy heir to the throne of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Can’t wait to see what adventures are next for the worlds greatest detective and the good doctor!

Good but not Doyle

Would you listen to Sherlock Holmes and the King's Evil: again? Why?

Not as good as the original by A.C. Doyle, especially the last story, it didn't have the right tone and storyline.

What did you like best about this story?

Several of the stories were really close to Doyles style.

Which character – as performed by John Telfer – was your favorite?

The preformance was good, the right tone for Sherlock Holmes stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

As it's a collection of short stories, it's perfect for listning on the way to and fromwork

Any additional comments?

I havent listen to any of the authers other Sherlock holmes stories.

Yes! Sherlockians will like

Good performance overall. The story is the thing though- I just listened to all of the Conan Doyle Holmes stories and Mr Thomas rings true with these additional adventures. I definitely recommend.
