Publisher's summary

"[Narrator Eliza Foss] ably differentiates the many characters and provides a smooth narration, allowing the listener to enjoy both the increasing tension of the investigation and the respites of the characters' backstories. This mystery will engage series fans and new listeners alike." (AudioFile Magazine)

Allison Brennan’s New York Times best-selling Lucy Kincaid and Max Revere series collide in a powerful audiobook, Shattered, about revenge, betrayal, and the desire for justice. Over a span of 20 years, four boys have been kidnapped from their bedrooms, suffocated, and buried nearby in a shallow grave. Serial killer or coincidence?

That’s the question investigative reporter Maxine Revere sets out to answer when an old friend begs her to help exonerate his wife, who has been charged with their son’s recent murder. But Max can do little to help because the police and D.A. won’t talk to her - they think they have the right woman. Instead, Max turns her attention to three similar cold cases. If she can solve them, she might be able to help her friend.

Justin Stanton was killed 20 years ago, and his father wants closure - so he is willing to help Max with her investigation on one condition: that she work with his former sister-in-law - Justin’s aunt, FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid. Trouble is, Max works alone, and she’s livid that her only access to the case files, lead detective and witnesses depends on her partnering with a federal agent on vacation. She wants the career-making story almost as much as the truth - but if she gets this wrong, she could lose everything.

Haunted by Justin’s death for years, Lucy yearns to give her family - and herself - the closure they need. More important, she wants to catch a killer. Lucy finds Max’s theory on all three cases compelling - with Max's research added to Lucy’s training and experience, Lucy believes they can find the killer so justice can finally be served. But the very private Lucy doesn’t trust the reporter any more than Max trusts her.

Max and Lucy must find a way to work together to untangle lies, misinformation, and evidence to develop a profile of the killer. But the biggest question is: why were these boys targeted? As they team up to find out what really happened the night Justin was killed, they make a shocking discovery: Justin’s killer is still out there...stalking another victim...and they already may be too late.

It was okay

Not a great choice if you like books that make you think or have you guessing the whole time. Many times throughout the book, I found myself checking the amount of time remaining. Which I never do. It just seemed drawn out and not even interesting. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for something with twists and suspense.

Enjoyably, Despite Overly Dramatic Performance! 🙄

This is my first Brennan book. I would have enjoyed the printed version better due to the narration by Fass. Her portrayal of male characters is actually better than her female characters at many times. She adds too much inflection in her female voices causing their emotion to sound fake and overly dramatic. Both Lucy and Max's characters are strong lead females not the annoying bimbos they are made to sound like. I will not listen to another book narrated by Fass. She is more suitable for humorous, light hearted romance novels than mystery thrillers.

I will try another book by Brennan. The plot held my interest despite the poor performance. Shattered is probably a good introduction to someone not familiar with Lucy or Maxine. The plot is long and the characters and back-stories are well explained so it doesn't matter if it's your first book or not. There is some repetition of story content should have been paired down. After reviewing other books in the series I see a lot of background in Shattered came from other books, I'm sure I would have found the repetition annoying (a personal pet peeve).

Bottom line, a pretty good plot and a mindless listen if you're not picky about the narration. However, If you're like me and strongly prefer highly skilled narrators then you might find this Audible annoying and better save your credit for something else.

Very Disappointed.

Would you try another book from Allison Brennan and/or Eliza Foss?

Yes

What was most disappointing about Allison Brennan’s story?

The author tried to combine two great characters/story lines and failed. None of the suspense or action both these characters usually deliver.

Which scene was your favorite?

No great scenes.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

I will try her next installment in both series but don't waste your credits on this one.

Great Combination

I liked how she put Lucy and Max into the same book. I hope there will be another one.

So many mysteries!

I love how the author included minor mysteries in addition to the main one. The characters were well developed and the ending makes me eager to read the next in the series. Well done!

Great for putting you to sleep

This book was so slow moving and predictable, that it was a snorer! The narration was horrible! Would not recommend at all.

A really good read

I often dislike serial killer novels because they are so gruesome but this story was character driven. It held my interest.

Shattered: A great title for a story that shatters

I completely enjoyed the book and found it hard to take breaks from listening. I have binged listened since picking up the Quinn & Costa series, which I loved. The best thing about this author is her ability build and maintain strong characters that are believable. I really like the character of Maxine and several times I wondered why Max took a backseat in this story. I have not listened to the Kincaid series so Lucy and family were all new to me. I would like for Lucy and Max to consult together in future books. Good dynamics between the two. This book has a sad and disturbing focus, but it was well written and good finally triumphed. I am sure that I will read all of AB’s books!
