Publisher's Summary

A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people's secrets is silenced.

The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it's not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that's exactly what happens one cold February evening.

The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described "social information reporter," or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she'd find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone's done the same to her, literally - with a knife to the brachial artery.

Eve didn't like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she'll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn't want to know...

"Story is decent, narrator not for me!"

The book was good but maybe after 45 full novels it's getting hard to come up with stuff. This case was pretty easy to guess the culprit. I knew who it was as soon as we came in contact with the person. I know their life can't always be full of conflict or full of crazy but this one was lacking a bit for me... maybe that personal connection we know and like from this series.

Also, I listened to the audiobook and holly cow! I do NOT enjoy the narrator at all! Her Peabody is HORRIBLE! It's almost too male like. I will not spend the extra money next time on the audio book. The book wasn't horrible, the story was ok. Audio, I would not recommend though!

I look forward to hearing the next installment in the life of Eve and the ones she loves! Always a great read/listen. Love Susan Erickson also - she is Eve and Roarke!

    "Cop Central.........Yikes!!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A change of Eve's constant anger.......time to heal this women and let her get over herself. Her attitude was acceptable in the earlier books but she has to move on. She's had therapy and a lot of counseling....it's time to have a positive attitude change. Also, every potential suspect was threatened with a trip to Cop Central if they didn't do it her way. You can count on getting an instant admonishment if you dare call her anything but Lieutenant. Real people don't act that way. She's angry all the time.

What could J. D. Robb have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Change it up a little. Leave out Eve's past childhood. Develop the characters in a new direction so we look forward to reading the next book. Keep it interesting. This is a woman that is constantly struggling with how to adapt to her new world. Let her finally be successful in that endeavor. She acts like she is from a different planet. I found myself rolling my eyes and cringing in some parts of the book. Minimize the love making scenes with Roarke....we get it.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

Sommerset and Peabody remain my favorites!

    Any additional comments?

I have read all the books in the series. I consider this a monetary and time investment. JD Robb is an excellent author and I will continue with the series in hopes that we will see a marked improvement in Eves attitude and more appearances of the characters that we have grown to love and respect.

Secrets in Death was good. However, not as good as Devoted in Death and some of the others. I will still count the months until the next is released.

    "Excellent, As Always"

I love this series. If you want a solid, reliably satisfying read, J. D. Robb's In Death Series is a top choice. It's almost fifty books in and still going strong. The cast of characters are so full and rich that you can't wait to visit them in each story. I'm always happy to return to Eve's world.

"Narration took alot to get used to"
How did the narrator detract from the book?

JD Robb's books are always brilliant. They pull you in and make you lose all track of time. The narrator, however, really detracted from this book. I like to switch back and forth between my kindle at home an narration in my car. This narrator wasn't a clear speaker, and it took quite a bit of time to get used to and be able to understand her.

    "Same old story"

I guess it's getting a little tired now- same formula, nothing new or exciting. Eve's seemingly innocent questioning of common similes feels contrived. The author's dragging out the story of Eve's rape as a child in every story like a souvenir, along with graphic sex scenes in the present, is more than distasteful. If I count up all the times Ive fast forwarded these parts I'd have a whole new book. This storyline had numerous red herrings and by the time the author got to the second victim I had no idea who that was and the I had to go back to even remember the perpetrator. I just didn't care. Basically, meh 😐- just not worth the 10+ hours. The only mystery worth investigating is "who's the candy thief?"

    "Another great book"

I loved the story and character development. This book was less dark and more about the mental victimization of good people. Great to have Peabody stay true to McNab, Eve and herself. Looking forward to the next one.

    "Not quite up to snuff"

I love the series and anxiously await each installment, but this one felt "light". It was like Robb was trying to fit in a touch of each character (Nadine, Mavis, Eve's evil past) and there wasn't anything that grabbed me this time. Also the bad guy was just too obvious. I'll continue with the series, but I think I'll revisit some of the earlier novels for my next fix.

    "Story great as always"

The continuing saga of Eve, Rourke and their various friends and colleagues is as fascinating as ever. I have always read this series before, but thought I would try the latest on Audible. The narrators attempt at Rourkes Irish accent is pathetic and put me off to start with, but I got used to it and really enjoyed this latest enthralling addition to the set.

    "Disappointing"

Overall I've enjoyed the series, but this book was a real disappointment. It was pretty obvious who was the killer from very early on and the plot was really weak. Susan Erickson was excellent as always. Hopefully the next "in Death" will be back to standard

    "Always love these books"
Where does Secrets in Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved it just because it was an In Death book. I adore the characters and it feels comfortable listening to these books now.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Roarke and Dallas. Just love when they're together and how lovely they are with each other and how much he adores her.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

I love all the different voices she does and how distinctive they all are.

    Any additional comments?

The story was a little disjointed I found. I didn't really follow the reasoning behind the murderer and why Larinda had changed herself so much and her background was a bit odd but I still loved it just because it was what it was. For a fan of the books it was good but if it's your first go at them then please start at the beginning.
