Publisher's summary

A brilliant thriller from the author of the acclaimed Good Thief's Guide series asks: How can a woman simply vanish?

When Rob Hale wakes up in hospital after a motorcycle crash, he is told that Lena - the gorgeous blonde woman who was on the back of his bike - doesn't exist. The woman he describes bears a striking resemblance to his recently deceased sister, Laura, but has he really only imagined her? Convinced that Lena is as real as he is, Rob teams up with Rebecca Lewis - a London-based PI who has a mysterious connection to Laura - to follow the clues. He learns that even a close-knit community like the Isle of Man can hide dangerous secrets that will not stay safe forever.

Great story of intrigue, narrator by the best

Love Simon Vance, but hadn't read anything by this author before. Liked the reviews and so gave it a go... Loved it, well written storyline with twists but not too many that u can't keep track of. Vance just gets u so into the story and the characters it makes for good times. Definitely recommend and will try more from this author.

Not moved but when the PI was able to protect herself and Rob with the wrench.

Safe House

I wanted to like this story and as I listened it kept my attention and I liked the characters and desperately wanted to know who done it. Simon Vance's narration was flawless as usual. As we neared the end, however, I started to think that someone should have explained the theory of Occam's Razor to some of characters. I'll try to not have any real spoilers here, but come on, the plot to cover up this, fake that, kidnap her, implicate them, steal this, destroy that, involve this person and that person AND the other person, all with little tiny bits of information pertaining to a huge convoluted plot. Yikes. No wonder all of the three principle blonde's plots failed so spectacularly. Rocky was cool tho.

Because of Simon Vance

My new credits have not arrived, I am tired of so-so narration, so I bought Safe House, it was cheap and I knew with Simon Vance narrating it would be 'listenable.' Good move on my part it is an enjoyable listen.

A bit convoluted but very entertaining

Terrific narrator. Plot lines kept me guessing. A solid 4.5 but rounding up. I am excited to check out more from this author.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

Every new chapter was more engrossing than the last, and what a ride! Once I began reading, it was nearly impossible to put down. This is a clever, brilliantly-crafted thriller with great characters and more than a few twists. Two enthusiastic thumbs-up!

Enjoyable read!

After a slow start this mystery picks up speed and kept me engaged and entertained throughout! I definitely was surprised by several of the twists and turns and enjoyed it immensely.
The narration is well done. However, for me the voice didn't quite fit the main character and sounded much older than I would have expected this particular character to sound.
I Definitely recommend this mystery.

Complicated Tale

So many secrets in this story. I wasn't able to guess them all which made listening enjoyable. Reader does a good job. I'd never heard of The Isle of Man and activities there. I like learning of new places and people who live there. The characters were interesting, and I especially enjoyed the female "private eye" and her skills and strengths. There is some violence, but not enough to turn me away from the story. However, I must confess, I fast-forwarded a bit not hear it.

First rate thriller!

Well written and fast paced! Well drawn characters. The bad guys are really bad and the good characters well balanced.
Got to read it!

Safe House way too safe

What's wrong here? Not the writing, which is solid, or the characters, who are believable. It's the plot. It's diagrammed. Sentences that would be alert and alive instead have their backs broken and forward motion impeded.

Instead of moving along, the story is stuck in a story-hospital the writer explains everything. Ewan is the anti-Elmore Leonard writer. Leonard sets his stories free into the world, and Ewan muffles his with explanations.

Ewan constantly stops the action to allow his characters to explain themselves to each other, but really to us. He doesn't tell a story as much as he retells it. It goes nowhere for too much of the time.

The narrator, the excellent Simon Vance, is, as always, excellent.
