Publisher's Summary

When the firefighters of Ladder Company 189 pull Clare's friends out of a blazing cafe, she happily comes to their rescue. As a favor to the men, she visits their firehouse kitchen to teach them the finer points of operating their newly donated espresso machine. But more than their coffee turns out to be hot. Somebody's torching cafes around the city, and firefighters are beginning to die in suspicious ways....

Believing the two events are related, Clare investigates, staking out a five-borough bake sale and sniffing out clues in the pizza joints of Brooklyn. When her detective boyfriend, Mike Quinn, is pulled into the fire of a false accusation, Clare is desperate to put out the flames. But will she be able to come to Mike's rescue before someone tries to extinguish her?

"Firefighters play a big part in this cozy mystery-"

Clare Cosi of the NY Village Blend coffeehouse is back into detecting murder. This time she, her famed mother-in-law, and another of her employees are caught in a fire bomb at another coffeehouse. Their good friend and artist ends up in a coma and the fire investigator is not convinced that a firebomb started the fire. But when one of the firefighters looses his life in a second coffeehouse fire, the search begins for this serial arsonist.

This series is always exciting and informative. This book is dedicated to firefighters and their families everywhere, but especially to all those men and women who fought the blazes after the 9/11 tragedy. The authors do a great job humanizing these firefighters--one of which is the fictional brazen cousin of Clare's policeman boyfriend. These cousins' relationship has been less than friendly in the past. We learn about their history in this mystery.

I highly recommend this series. It's also filled with delicious recepies. I've been listening to the audio version of these books, and have found the reader adds a great deal to my enjoyment.

    "NOT Awful :-) !"

I've read and listened to a lot of the Cleo Coyle Coffee House Mysteries. Love them. It is set in a compolitan background with lots of different accents: Brooklyn, NJ, English, French, Italian....
    Interesting plot and satifying ending.

    "A Salute to Fire Fighters"

This story gets off to a fast and frightening start when Clare and two friends are trapped in a fire while visiting a coffee house owned by an acquaintance. They are rescued by the FDNY.

Fire fighters are key characters in the plot and I found that aspect of the story interesting.

I loved the first book of this series that I read (Murder by Mocha). I did not like this one quite as much for reasons that are particular to me. I enjoy stories about amateur detective . However, I do not enjoy it when the amateur detective puts herself in danger while following a "hunch". That occurs several times in this story.

I will give this series another try. The core characters are colorful and interesting. The mysteries are intricate and move along at a steady pace.

Narrator Rebecca Gibel has a clear voice and excellent diction.

"Can't get all the way through this one."
Would you try another book from Cleo Coyle and/or Rebecca Gibel?

I like Cleo Coyle, but will skip the audiobook from now on. The narration is just awful-painfully slow and melodramatic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Didn't get that far.

What didn’t you like about Rebecca Gibel’s performance?

Waaayyyy too slow and I hate the overly dramatic performance. Just read the book, please.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It might be just fine in book form.

"This my be my favorite coffeehouse yet!"
If you could sum up Roast Mortem in three words, what would they be?

    Amazing character development!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! Aside from two mysteries to be solved, there was so much action. I also loved learning more about Quin. I'm not mad that Matt takes a backseat because I'm such a fan of Mike! He's great!

What about Rebecca Gibel’s performance did you like?

You know who is speaking by how she does each character's voice! It's amazing!

As the wife of a fire lieutenant this one hit close to home. Thank you for honoring firefighters and helping others understand exactly what they place on the line each shift.

    "Great!"

I have enjoyed listening to Cleo Coyle books. This book was one of my favorites. I particularly like the part in this book when Claire is showing the fire fighters how to make espresso. The humor was great!

"I truly enjoyed listening to the story."

I felt the plot had a nice twist to it while being entertaining not to mention giving high praise to the brave NYC Fire Fighters. My heart will always be with them on their unselfish daily struggle to care for the public. They don't get enough Kudos for what they do. We love them and pray for them daily!

    "I like this book, but..."

    I like this book!

OK, that out of the way, there are a few things that's starting to annoy me about Cleo Coyle's writing. Narrow minded investigators seems to be a prerequisite to let our heroine do her sleuthing. Instead of letting the story flow, faulty "whodunit" theories makes for a jerky story.
Also: what should be a good guy character, comes across as a horny jerk for most of the story (you'll know who I mean, trust me).
Coyle still likes to write about food, but thankfully this book has a lot more writing about coffee. Me likey!

Good ending, even if it felt a bit rushed.

Gibel's narration was good as usual.
