Publisher's summary

Faye Longchamp, back in school to pursue her archaeological aspirations, has landed a job as chief archaeologist for a rural development project, so she heads to the hills of Alabama with Joe, her Cherokee assistant. She’s looking forward to a legitimate dig and hopes to uncover the mystery of the Sujosa, an ethnic group of mysterious origin. The Sujosa have lived in Alabama’s most remote hills for centuries and have shown an impressive immunity to many diseases, including AIDS.

Late one night, Faye awakens to find the house in flames. She saves herself and one of her housemates, but her friend Carmen, the project historian, never had a chance. The suspicious death leads Faye to a different sort of investigation. Then within days, a teenage boy jumps from a cell phone tower that, when completed, will connect the Sujosa with the outside world. Now Faye must use her professional and personal skills to identify the killer and discover the long-buried secret of the Sujosa, as well.

Critic reviews

"Faye Longchamp, girl archaeologist, is…in charge of finding the origins of an ethnic group of people in the Alabama hills.... Soon, Faye is fighting for her own life against someone who doesn’t want the secrets of the Sujosa revealed. A fascinating look at contemporary archaeology but also a twisted story of greed and its effects." ( Dallas Morning News)
"Evans’ second archaeological mystery is every bit as good as her debut, Artifacts.… Faye makes a compelling heroine, and she’s supported by an interesting array of suspects.… Transcripts of Dr. Martinez’s interviews scattered throughout the narrative provide important clues for the discerning reader." ( Publishers Weekly)
"The locale is wonderfully described and beautifully etched for the reader. A compelling read that holds the reader's attention throughout." ( Midwest Book Review)

When?

I grew up never knowing the word sherd. This very review tries to auto correct it. I learned that a piece of broken glass or ceramic or whatever was a shard. Nope, no auto correct on that one. While both are in the Oxford dictionary; I have to wonder when a shard becomes or became a sherd? Is this another one of those words that’s made up or modified from another because certain people think it makes them look smart and refined? I’m not diving deep into the when’s and wheres of the word ‘sherd’, but I know I never heard it for 30+ years, but now it’s all I hear from the science-y types.
Does anybody know more?

Archaeology/murder

This book will be fun for readers who enjoy their mysteries and love digging in the dirt, the past and the what -ifs. The author creates past lives that ring so true you will keep listening. Then you will be sorry when the last page is read.

Very Interesting.

While the group of people are fictional, they are based in reality. My family always thought that we had American Indian heritage, but when my Father, who had olive complexion and black hair did his DNA there was no American Indian blood, but mostly English and Portuguese.

Good book.

Interesting backdrop for a mystery. By the end of the book I wanted to go find some local crafts people and look at their pottery.

An exciting, thought provoking story. I loved all the characters and found them very believable. I’m looking forward to reading more of Fay Longchamps adventures
