Publisher's Summary

The new Kay Scarpetta novel from the world's #1 bestselling crime writer.

Determined to find out what happened to her former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, murdered six months earlier, Kay Scarpetta travels to the Georgia Prison for Women, where an inmate has information not only on Fielding, but also on a string of grisly killings. The murder of an Atlanta family years ago, a young woman on death row, and the inexplicable deaths of homeless people as far away as California seem unrelated. But Scarpetta discovers connections that compel her to conclude that what she thought ended with Fielding's death and an attempt on her own life is only the beginning of something far more destructive: a terrifying terrain of conspiracy and potential terrorism on an international scale. And she is the only one who can stop it.

    "Patricia Cornwell frustrates me!"

I own all of Cornwell's works in various formats. At her best, she is one of the best modern crime novelists. During recent years she has become inconsistent. Depraved Heart, her latest Scarpetta novel is almost as good as her early Scarpetta novels. This novel, Red Mist, is Scarpetta 19 and it ties with Dust, Scarpetta 21, and the worst of the series. Even so, neither novel is as bad as Portrait of a Killer which is her effort to solve the real identity of Jack the Ripper which is listed improperly as non-fiction.

    "Time to Quit"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I've stayed with Patricia Cornwell and Dr. Kay Scarpetta for all of these years....it's time to quit. I bought the kindle version of the last book and only read it all the way through out of past loyalty. It was awful. This one is just as bad. Too much stream of consciousness for a character that has less and less of a personality. Kay has become bitter...self-pitying, making huge issues out of nothing. I don't associate with those kinds of people in real life. Why would I want to do that in a book? I'm done. Patricia Cornwell should also be done with this series.

Has Red Mist turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No. Only this author.

Ending was rushed but storyline was great. We'll worth the read. When will Benton learn to listen to her?

    "another great Kate scarpetta adventure."

though I find the writing a bit repetitive, the story is so good that I forgive any perceived flaws. Kate Burton is the perfect choice for these characters.

"Cornewll always writes a great book!"
What made the experience of listening to Red Mist the most enjoyable?

    Great book.
I love listening to it while stuck in hideous Los Angeles traffic

What was one of the most memorable moments of Red Mist?

Great twists and surprises. Another great Scarpetta story

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I am a huge Scarpetta fan. While I understand that she is a serious character, the narrator book puts me to sleep. Her interpretation of New York & Southern accents (for me) miss the mark.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No.

    "good book. Very poor read."

Sounded like a librarian reading a fairy tale book to kindergarteners, except all the dramatic voice changes and pauses were in the wrong places. I don't think the reader pre-read the book to know what connected to what. Very annoying.

"A less whiny Kay is a very good thing."

Like many other reviewers I was very disappointed in many of the books leading up to this. I only kept reading because I had the glimmer of hope that the books would return to form. I have been rewarded, in part. Kay is much more like her earlier self; she is confident instead of whiny. The book is written in first person too -- without all the exploration of the killer's thoughts. UnfortunatelyI am still quite disappointed in both Marino and Lucy. I hope that the trend continues.

Didn't really like the reader. voices too much the same for each character. Cornwell's book is okay. Not great, not terrible.
