Publisher's summary

What's a girl to do when her imprisoned brother begs her to delve into their father's 16-year-old murder conviction? How about peel back the lies, upend the fairy tales, and roil the populace of Lavitte - a sweet apple of a town with a wormy, festering core? That's what Allison Fennimore chooses. Despite her infamous surname and people's wilted memories, this jaded cynic of a daughter sinks her teeth in and refuses to let go. She can practically taste the bitterness of that long-ago, twisted night when two teenagers died, linked to her father by bad luck and a few strands of rope.

Ignoring the dense local atmosphere, where image trumps substance and lies become legend, Allison stirs the pot. The more layers she discards, the more elusive the truth becomes. And when a key source of information turns up dead, the dark edges of resentment coil in around her like a slowly tightening noose. As revelations get ugly, Allison may wish she'd never ventured toward the forbidden fruit of truth.

Unravel this great story!

My Review
Sixteen years ago Allison Fennimores father stood trial for murder, but before he received judgement he hanged himself. Allison, a promising student, abandoned all hope of a career and left her small town home to move to New York to work in a bar. Her brother is in prison, now that he is clean and sober he wants Allison to revisit past events and attempt to find the real truth. Back in her home town Allison is made very aware of the antipathy towards her family, but it is her mother who has born the brunt of this hostility for so many years. Deserted by her former friends she can't even go out for a coffee in the town, such is her life now that Allison fears for her mothers mental health.
This story certainly lives up to its title, it is chock full of intrigue, layer after layer, twist after twist, just when you think you might just know what actually happened all those years ago and what's happening now it all changes. I was quite surprised at how some of the characters unfolded, again, the stripping of layer after layer reveals the true personalities that have always existed beneath whichever veneer the character had chosen to present to the world. To make it an even more satisfying read the author gives us an ending with yet more surprises. I also now have a greater understanding and sympathy for the misery and anguish the families of those who are charged with committing heinous crimes are made to to undergo at the hands of others.

Narrator
Narrated by Rebecca Roberts who, I'm happy to say, is a delightful new discovery for me. Rebecca gives her listeners a great performance with her lovely, easy to listen to voice, she does everything right, I love the cadence of her voice, and how with such seeming ease, she trajects the emotion and frustration of Allison and the craziness of others. I think her technical abilities are superb, the timing, gender changes and characterisations are masterful. A new favourite.

Love this one👍

This is the first time I’ve listened to Anne McAnenys work an I was impressed. The story was abit slow at times, an then bang, I’d be chewing my nails an hanging onto the edge of my seat. Rebecca Roberts is awesome, and her narration style really brought The characters to life in her own special way. If you love a good page turner and a great narrater, then give this one a raz, you won’t be disappointed😎

Couldn't put it down!

Excellent story line. The characters are well formed and then presented in the narration. I had a tough time putting the book down and then I was anxious to be able to get back to it!
Rebecca Roberts did an excellent job with the different character voices making absolutely certain that each one had it's own voice consistently. The inflection and tone were perfect from start to finish.
I look forward to listening to another book written by Anne Mcaneny and narrated by Rebecca Roberts!

Crime Investigation at it's Finest!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys gritty investigative drama, or small-town secrets!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Certain parts did, especially when the mayors wife was talking to Allison in the police station!

What does Rebecca Roberts bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brought a level of realism to the experience, that wouldn't have come as easily if I had just read the book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Some secrets are best left buried.

Any additional comments?

I'm a huge fan of police procedurals and crime dramas on television, but for some reason, I don't usually read that genre. I was given a copy of this book for an honest review, and I am so glad I was. The author has a good grasp of small town gossips and secret keeping. The voice actor did a great job with all of the characters, from the snobby southern belles to the gritty, tough-as-nails cops. Well done!

Twisty, mysterious fun

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend this title to most friends who enjoy mysteries.

What did you like best about this story?

What I enjoyed best about this story was how it picked up as time went on in the book. The narration was also stellar--smooth, with distinct character voices which were appropriate for the setting. The pacing was good, and as the ending got closer and closer the payoff built up very well.

Have you listened to any of Rebecca Roberts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any of Rebecca Roberts' other books but I most likely will now. She gave a very solid performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I couldn't listen to this all in one sitting but once I got within about 150 pages of the end I didn't want to put it down either.

Any additional comments?

The moving pieces all fit together well and the story was well-constructed. I don't give many five star reviews--4 is more my usual for something I really enjoyed. I don't want to give any spoilers but the story rates a solid 4.

Unraveled

This was a fantastic audio book, which I purchased after reading such positive comments about the narrator. Cover ups, politics and small town secrets are unraveled as the story progresses. I definitely look forward to more books both by the author and narrator.

Great!

Allison has a rough few years where family is concerned. Her dad was convicted of murder 16 years ago, her brother is now locked up as well. She has tried to move on and put some of it behind her when, out of the blue her brother asks her to check out their father's case. Oh boy, is she in for in for a surprise!! Never-ending back and forth of trying to figure out the truth, Allison does some unthinkable things. I really enjoyed the story and the narration! I give 4 STARS.
