Publisher's summary

Timothy Hallinan's private eye Simeon Grist has gone out of print, and he's pissed about it.

Simeon thought he was living a good life - solving mysteries, falling in and out of love, risking life and limb to do the right thing. Then the last Simeon Grist mystery was pulped to make newsprint, and he woke up in a room where nothing ever changed except his sense of who he was: His entire existence was a work of fiction that the real world was in the process of forgetting. And when one of his few remaining readers is murdered, Simeon discovers that he can - at great risk - step out of the pages of his books and into the world of the living. The only problem: Even if he succeeds in solving the murder, winning the love of a real-life woman, and finding the man who wrote him, he could still die trying.

More of a meta-nov

I greatly enjoyed this, but of course it wasn’t really a Simeon Grist novel — more of a Thursday Next novel. Grist, the book character, is the protagonist, but he’s surrounded by other forgotten detective from fiction, watching as fewer people read their books and both celebrating and sending up the cliches of the genre. Quite fun and mind-bendy, and there is a mystery, but it’s secondary to what’s going on beyond and around. Perhaps this was a way to get a revival of the Grist series, but I don’t begrudge that — once I adjusted, it a fun ride!

Hallinan, Heller, Vonnegut…

Tim Hallinan is the one of the best and most clever writers I know. He’s right up there with Joseph Heller and I hope he gets the recognition he deserves.
Well done on the narration. Hallinan has been blessed with exceptional narrators on all of his audiobooks.

Timothy Hallinan is back, baby!

I admit to a bit of bewilderment during the beginning of this new book. It took awhile to mentally shift gears & accept Simeon's new reality. But I'm very pleased that I did.

By the way, if it's true that publisher's turned away previous Simeon Grist novels, they should be switched.

Anyway, Hallinan is one of those author's I periodically check on to see if anything new has come up in the Audible catalog. And after viewing his site, it appears that he has a couple of new titles not yet available on Audible...so please get on that, Audible!

I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next new book, Mr Hallinan, and I sincerely hope you keep writing for years (& avoid your inner Patsy and/or Pansy).
