Publisher's Summary

My name is Roy Morgan, and I'm not your average Atlanta cop.

For one, most of them don't have to kill people to stay alive. I do. It's a half-demon thing. Yep, that's right, half-demon. It's awesome, especially since I'm half-warlock too, and those two sides don't much get along.

Still, that and a buck will get you a candy bar. So it's all good.

Or at least it was.

See, I had this dumb idea to stop a robbery in progress and have myself a snack. Turns out these weren't your run of the mill robbers. No, these were demonic slavers, there to capture the district attorney and sell her off to the highest bidding demon in Hell.

Now if I want to stop them, I'm going to have to fight my way through a city full of hellfire-flinging, gun-toting, spell-weaving demons.

My name is Roy Morgan, and I think I'll have seconds.

"Fans of Quincy Harker have a new friend"

If you are a fan of the Quincy harker novels, Constantine and others like it. this is a perfect match. A half demon half warlock demon hunter. Snarky attitude well narrated. Good storyline and characters. Can't wait for more. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

    "Excellent Performance"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it is a good read with a solid storyline.

What other book might you compare Pound of Flesh to and why?

    I can't.

What does James Foster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brings the emotions and the humor that are ingrained within the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction just thought it funny that he kept forgetting that he had two sides. As old as he is he should be able to seamlessly switch between the two,

    Any additional comments?

I got this book via audiobook boom. I loved the narration and I loved Gary.

    "Not great, not terrible...."

Fair narrator, and very simplistic story that doesn't address things like when the guy ever gets to work, or why no one noticed his activities. Just this side of a total waste of time.

"A Gritty, Hard Boiled Detective/Urban Fantasy Tale"

“Pound Of Flesh is a pretty good start to a hard-boiled, detective/urban fantasy story with a touch of “Dexter.” Roy Morgan is a combination of conflicting characteristics and DNA. He’s an Atlanta cop trying to do good. He is also a killer and therefore a criminal. This is due to Roy’s exotic heritage. He is half demon and half warlock. Two species that traditionally don’t peacefully co-exist in the world that authors, J.A. Cipriano and Conner Kressley created. If that wasn’t enough, Roy’s demon half requires sustenance in the form of human life force. In order to survive, Roy must kill. In order to make the best of a no-win situation, Roy chooses to prey only on the scum of the earth and not just anyone who is convenient to his survival.

That premise alone would be enough to make a great story, but J.A. Cipriano and Conner Kressley added another layer. Roy ends up defending the district attorney from robbers who turn out to be demons. Demons who have specifically targeted the DA. “Pound Of Flesh” is an excellent start to a new series that’s worth your time if you enjoy urban fantasy stories. If that isn’t enough, “Pound Of Flesh” is narrated by James Foster, who is one of the best narrators in audiobooks. Finally, this audio book was provided by the narrator at no cost in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of Audio Book Boom.

    "Good Urban Fantasy Adventure"

This is a good book, that does not take its self to seriously. It moves at a nice pace and has some good characters and shows lots of potential for the series.

James Foster puts in a very good performance bringing the story to life, especially the banter between Roy and his Imp.

    "Special Charm"

Roy Morgan, Atlanta detective by day (ok that is a cliché since detectives work 24/7 for the most part, but hang with me) and ½ demon, ½ warlock by night (see sounds good, huh?). But today he stopped a robbery that turned out to be a bit more than the normal robbery, turns out the robbers where demons too and they were out to get the district attorney. So Gary, Roy’s imp, set out to protect and save her, oh did I mention how pretty she is, sorry guess I forgot.
This is an interesting book, it the first time I think I have read a book with a ½ demon ½ warlock cop with an imp sidekick in it, but it worked out well. There is a lot of metaphors in the story so prepare yourself but you get used to it pretty fast it becomes part of Roy’s charm, but I have to say I really wouldn’t mind a Gary for BFF, he is always there in a pinch. The narrator, James Foster, for the audio version of the book does an awesome job, I hope he as well as Roy and Gary are back soon for more demonly disasters.

    "Warlock-demon? Why not!"
If you could sum up Pound of Flesh in three words, what would they be?

Dresden meets the Iron Druid. Wait, that's five words :D

What other book might you compare Pound of Flesh to and why?

Jim Butcher's Dresden is like an older cousin to this guy. All the elements are there - tall, dark, internal struggle, helping innocents... there are demons, fairies and vampires too. Except our hero Ray is a cop. And he devours bad guys (literally). And has an imp called GARY. That's a promise of marvellous comic relief right there. Of COURSE I'm going to read that!

What about James Foster’s performance did you like?

I like performances that are not mere "reading". Here, you can feel James took time to get to know the characters and story. It shines through. Also, his narration has a pleasant flow. He's just very easy to listen to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

What moved me? Ray's actions when Ray and Gary were falling off the building. Go read the book and you'll find out what I'm on about :)

James Foster's voice kept ringing a little bell for me. I so I checked his other narratives out, I haven't listened to any before... so I still can't figure out why the bell rings. I really enjoyed listening to him it made the story come to life.
I now have both the audio and the ebook now.
The story is very good and fun to, though it had a couple of elements that I didn't care for.

"Fast Paced Urban Fantasy with Humorous Twists"
If you could sum up Pound of Flesh in three words, what would they be?

I enjoyed the fast paced action dotted with humor. I received this free copy in lieu of providing my personal review. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the story line. This fast paced and humorous offering disappointed me only once. That occurred when I found myself at the end of the last chapter while wishing for more. I will be on the lookout for the next book in this new and exciting series.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audio book by the author, narrator or publisher.

as usual this urban fantasy had me entertained and on edge it was fantastic. I always like how cipriano have a knack for telling stories and the perfect balance he seems to make with otjer authors so the story will be funny, with a lot of action and clever.

definitely a good book to pick out at any moment.

"A great start now what happens next?"

What this book does really well in both writing and narration is characters, the main characters are great with well-realised personality. I especially love how the imp is portrayed but I would not want to be around them myself.

If you like the modern day supernatural setting for your books then you should love this. I would like to know more about the setting and all the things the exist off screen.

The main character is quite powerful (compared to a mortal) but can be challenged by things in the world. This makes the dangerous situations much more interesting and tense as there is a real sense of risk. I think this could make a good film or TV show.

The plot is well done. The whole book is well paced and engrossing to listen to.I am more than happy with my time with this book and am interested to see what happens next book

All in all well worth a listen.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

    Any additional comments?

A thoroughly enjoyable, light hearted listen, just right to blow away the blues on a rainy day.
Roy Morgan is a police officer, recently transferred from Boston to Atlanta. But he's no ordinary man. His seeker abilities make finding the serial store-raider-come-killer easy, where others in the force had been clueless, and his capture of the culprit, one Charles Witmore, brings him to the attention of the beautiful Assistant DA, And he senses a real problem: he senses her near death, another of his 'gifts'. Because Roy is unique, even in the world of non-human beings: he is half Warlock, half demon - and the two aspects of himself are constantly at war with each other. But he's a good guy, despite his insatiable appetite, and the DA is attractive. He wants to protect her. All of which brings a load of trouble to him and Garry, the elf who rides on his shoulder.

The story is fast paced, humerous and the crazy characters well painted. The dialogue, too, is slick, quick and sardonically funny. There are lots of twists in this demon's tale. James Foster's narration perfectly matches his character, too, with well delineated dialogue from numerous voices and a fast delivery of the text. He really becomes Roy with his deliciously warm and humerous delivery. An excellent pairing of reader and text.

Beware, however, the ending leaves open more to come. The story has not ended fully, and only another book will bring a conclusion. My thanks to the rights holder who gifted me my copy of Pound of Flesh. I really enjoyed the concept, the crazy story narrated so well and, especially Roy and friend Garry. I'm really looking forward to meeting them again in book two.
