Publisher's Summary

Following the breakup of her marriage and her pursuit by an obsessed stalker, criminal defense attorney Emily Graham accepts an offer to work in a major Manhattan law firm. Feeling a need for roots, she buys her ancestral home in New Jersey, which her family sold in 1892, after the disappearance of young Madeline Shapley, one of Emily's forebears.

Now, more than a century later, as the house is being renovated, the bones of a young woman are found in the backyard. She is identified as Martha Lawrence, who disappeared four years earlier. Clutched in Martha's skeletal hand is the finger bone of another woman with a ring still on it - a Shapley family heirloom.

When Emily investigates the link between her family's past and the recent murder, she provokes a devious and seductive killer, who selects her as his next victim.

Critic Reviews

"The cleverly complex plot gallops along at a great clip...just may be Clark's best in years." (Amazon.com)

Very well done...

I thought that this book was fantastically written. All the perspectives that she gives are so vivid and up till the end, the villain is still completely hidden. Suspenseful and action packed.

Cozy read

I enjoyed this book - a light easy whodunit in a comfortable setting with likable characters. I loved the descriptions of the house - made me want to move in immediately. I will buy more Mary Higgins Clarke.

On the Street Where You Live

This would have been a so much better listen with a different narrator. She is trying to give a feeling of suspense, I guess. But it is very aggravating that she tends to try to give this impression by a certain breathiness in her voice delivery in the narration. And why does she end every sentence on an up note. I find myself longing to hear a definitive sentence. This is an aggravation I have to mentally block in order to stay with the story.

Actually I live most of the year in China, and rely on Audible. Books in English are not easily available here. Audible is truly a blessing!! Thanks!

Great Story

My first audio book of Mary Higgins Clark. Will purchase more for sure! Narration is a little too clipped though. Can definitely tell when it is the end of a sentence.

She seems to be losing her

Clark's early works deserved all the praise they got, in my opinion, but she's become formulaic (is that the same as prediectable?), and there's neither suspense, nor suprise, nor any real connection with the characters.

Maybe she need to take a break for a while.

Light, easy to listen to

Light, easy to listen to--great for cross country travel. No thinking involved--great audio. Appropriate for kids, (well, obviously not young ones--6th grade and up)

Ho Hum

I bought this to listen to while on vacation, so I wasn't expecting much. But I didn't expect it to be quite as pedestrian and predictable as it turned out to be.
